Oil Drain Plug Gasket Suggestion
I changed the oil on my Roush 402 and installed a new copper washer on the oil drain plug. After test driving it (test drove, cleaned the area thoroughly, and test drove the car again) I noticed some seepage around the drain plug.
It's not even enough to drip on the floor and I know it's not coming from another source. The drain plug can't be tightened any more. Anyone have any suggestions for another type of gasket (rubber?) or a gasket to use in conjunction with the copper ring? Maybe a little dab of high temp RTV? |
Sometimes that seepage stops by itself after a couple of heat cycles, so don't rush. If it continues to seep, I've had luck with Dorman's rubber/steel combo. Available from Summit.

Doug - guess what...mine does the same. Only when I really inspected it looks like the drip is actually coming from the threaded fitting plug (some us it for the oil temp gauge) and wisking back a few inches. Never actually forms a drip so i am not touching it. This fitting is on the pan a few inches forward of the oil drain plug on the drivers side.

work it a couple times back and forth to get the parts to wear together then put the final torque on it and see if it holds. soft aluminum washers work also.

I use a thick rubber gasket from NAPA. No seepage at all.

i had the same issues with my canton pan drain plug, no matter what gasket i used it seeped. i wrapped the threads with teflon tape problem over. it takes a minute extra but it never leaks.

I installed a permanent quick release fitting. I never have to remove the drain plug. I simply remove the protective cover and snap on a drain hose.

Just the rubber gasket all by itself. I don't use any thread sealer, either.

smear a little Hylomar on the threads. That fixed my seepage. It never dries out so removal is easy.

GM uses a Aluminum washer 1/2" with a rubber insert. Available at any GM dealer, maybe NAPA too? Ford uses something similar on there vehicles with aluminum oil pans.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I went down to the Napa store this morning and the parts guy brought out a drawer with a bunch of different types of oil plug gaskets. They had the Dormand, but the diameter of the copper ring was too large to be effective.
I ended up finding a rubber gasket (Napa PN 704-1964) that fits tightly around the oil plug with a perfect diameter to accommodate the copper ring and the pan surface. I put the rubber gasket on first, then the copper ring, the the oil plug. Seems to be working so far. |
