Starting help please
Car turned over, but didn't start. Next turn of the key caused a click but nothing else. Battery seems fine. If you put a finger on the solenoid, you feel the click, but nothing else happens. Tried bypassing the solenoid, still nothing. I'm a kayak builder, not a mechanic. ideas?

Sounds like a dead battery. Can you turn on your lights, honk your horn, turn on the fans with the engine off? If not, probably time for a new battery. Take it to your local auto parts store and have them test it for you. If it's good, check the ground strap to the frame.
Start with the easy stuff first.

Thanks. Neighbor tested the battery. No issues. Looking at the starter. Will be calling Peter tomorrow.

If you are able to bypass the solenoid and it will start, you can be assured the solenoid is bad. Replace it. The Buss bar that makes contact inside gets arced up and results in poor contacts that will not carry the necessary current for the Starter. Some of the remote solenoids can be disasembled and the contacts filed clean, or the bar flipped over to restore its function.

Bypass didn't work, that's why am looking at the starter. Have another issue I'd like Peter to fix, so I may try to get it back to Era.

we had a battery with 10.8 volts and it would not start the motor. Replaced the starter, still would not crank. replaced the battery and it cranked.
have the battery check at the a shop or parts store.

if your starter is getting a little tired, it will draw more amps than normal and cause your solenoid to switch (the clicking you hear) but not enough current to engage your starter. A light power cable from the trunk will also cause a significant voltage drop, enough to give you problems with an older starter. If you can start it with jumper cables direct to the solenoid and grounded to the motor then your main power cable (from the trunk to the solenoid) is on the light side and should be replaceds with a larger one. I went with a 0 welding cable, and the engine now cranks twice as fast as the size 2 cable I had.... but an older starter will crank a lot slower than a new one.

Also check your main battery grounds - At the battery and then at the engine. Both the connections and cable ends. Have the battery load tested at any good parts store. A check of the charging system is the next order of business.

Whatever your problem turns out to be,makes you think about wanting to learn how to do your own maintainance doesn't it? In this case a couple of inexpensive tools or pieces of equipment would help eliminate possibilities.Main tool, voltmeter.Does sound like bad battery.

Bought the volt meter. Appears to be the connection at the starter. Checking the crimp and the connection. Do have it running again.

Mine did the exact same thing, tightened both connections at the battery posts....no more issues!
Doesn't take much.
