Ford trucks have "FORD" on the back, I saw a car the other day, that had "COBRA" on the back.. I tried looking it up, all I saw was a Shelby Cobra, but that wasn't it.

Obviously anyone can put any emblem on any vehicle they want..... There is a Shelby F-150 Supersnake prototype....but not sure if has ever been produced...

Most of the Cobra Mustangs do....even from '94 up I believe. On the rear bumper cover, instead of Mustang molded in, it says Cobra.

One addendum to the Wikipedia article ...

I was told by the owner of a '99 that the first '99 SVT Cobras have MUSTANG rear bumper covers, then later in '99 they changed over to COBRA bumper covers.

Here is a link to some photos of various Mustangs ...

Not true in all cases.....my 95 Cobra R says "Mustang", as does the 2000 Cobra R....funny.

Good point John....

Weren't the R models based off of stripped down, base model GT's? That would make sense...

Randy Rosenberg 10-07-2010 08:54 AM

Mid-80's Dodge Daytona? However, doesn't Ford own "Cobra" as a trademark?

Basically, yes....but upgraded to a street legal race car that was campaigned in the IMSA series, among others.....AC delete, radio delete, rear seat delete, fuel cell added, big brakes and a 351W pushrod motor in the 95. Lots of specialty parts like degas bottle, oil cooler, PS cooler, additional bracing and suspension upgrades.

Mine ran in the One Lap of America in 1995...

My daily driver is a 2004 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra convertible with the 32-valve 4.6-liter supercharged V8, 6-speed manual, and independent rear suspension (all standard). I bought it new on April 16, 2004 (the last day of the 40th year of the Mustang!)--it has been a wonderful car for me! The IRS makes the car!

I'm not sure if the original 1993 SVT Cobra rear bumper said Cobra or not, but none of the '99s did, and I don't believe that the R models did, either (1993, 1995, and 2000 model years). There were no regular SVT Cobras made for 2000 or for 2002--I did order a 2000 model and had a 2000 owner's manual and 2000 service manual sent to me in advance, but no 2000 SVT Cobras (other than the R) were ever built. (My order was placed in August of 1999 and was finally cancelled by the factory in May of 2000.)

No SVT Cobra ever came from the factory with an automatic transmission, and IRS appeared on the regular SVT Cobras only for the 1999, 2001, 2003, and 2004 model years (no 2000s or 2002s for the regular model).

Not sure if Ford made a T-5 Cobra or not. If they did, it would be quite rare.

azfordman 10-07-2010 03:01 PM

My bad......! I thought you were talking about a truck!

Agreed 100%...both my sons had '99 SVT Cobras and neither one said C O B R A on the rear...they both said M U S T A N G...However, an '03 rear bumper which does say C O B R A does fit on a '99 and may be the cause of the confusion...

My 1996 SVT Cobra Mustang, all original with 26000 miles, says COBRA on the rear bumper cover.

As it should. All '94 - '98 SVT Cobras said Cobra on the rear bumper cover (except, of course, the 1995 R model).

"What car looks like a Mustang, and has COBRA on the back?"

Didn't the 78 King Cobra Mustang have Cobra on the back bumper as well?

I believ that the early Fox body cars also had a Cobra model in the early years. Mostly a name and nothing of any HP importance.

Mark IV 10-08-2010 11:58 AM

The 1979 to 1981 "Fox" Mustangs had a "Cobra" model, this was the "performance" model. In those years the engine choice was the 140HP Turbo 2.3 (the old carb'ed version) or the 302 2V at 138HP (but bunches more torque). The "Cobra" became the "GT" in 1982 with the new 155HP 302 2Vand the in 1983 the 175HP 302 4V (5.0) and then the 1984 205HP 5.0.
