Replacement visor bracket

The mounting bracket on my sun visor that the allen set screw threads into is stripped, cheap metal that it is. I know that you can buy a full mounting kit from Finishline for $60, but is there anywhere I can but just a single bracket?

Also, does anyone know if the Finishline set is higher quality metal? Maybe I should replace them all, but I'd rather not do it with the same old crap so the problem happens again in a year.

I'm sure most of you have solved this problem. So the solution is?

i don't know what others have done, but i looked at a pic of the part with a set screw, it looks like they can be heli-coiled\ repaired. or even made new out of whatever material you want. i don't have any samples of them but if you mail me the bad one i can either repair it or price a new set made correctly out of stainless for you.
let me know if i can help doug...

fred

Can you helicoil something that small?

FWB 12-31-2010 08:19 PM

as long as there is enough meat to go to the next size,.....yes. the thread inserts o.d will be the next size up the i.d is....for instance....

if its a 6-32 set screw, the helicoil tap is a size equivalent to a #8 screw
its designated as a 6-32 STI tap but its major diameter is the same as a #8 or .160 inches.

what size is the set screw now?

FWB 12-31-2010 08:31 PM

as a general rule i have found most.....not all....products we buy as consumers are made in less than high quality environments. we take for granted when there are threads in a product that they are correct, more often than not they are not manufactured correctly. to the average person they seem to be fine but after tightening and loosening a screw the threads are gone.......why?....sometimes oversized holes being used to thread....which you then loose a percentage of thread engagement, or dull tooling causing bad thread geometry. the quality and size of the fastener used can booger threads real quick.
look at the set screws closely are the threads nice? does the allen broached hole look a little funky?
if you answered yes then maybe its crappy fasteners causing it....

I was thinking heli coil also. That would be another nice part for Fred to make for us.

As I remember the visor bracket screws into a brass insert, making Heli coils impossible to install.

I spoke with Finishline and their sun visor mounting kit includes all polished stainless steel brackets, so that seems like the way to go. If it doesn't hold up, which it seems like it should, I will be calling Fred.

Thanks for all the help.

DCDoug -

I need the 4 angled brackets that screw to the windshield and screws. Do you want to sell me part of the bracket kit you plan to order?

Send me a PM if interested.

John
