timing issue
 
I had a oil leak on the front of my intake, so I remove distrubor and intake and put new gaskets on intake, were I have my problem is I marked the distrubor but forgot to mark were the rotor button was when I pulled it, now I'm out of time.Any quick way? I'm thinking of pulling valve cover on the number one side and bump it until it comes to TDC and then point rotor on number one on distrubor cap?Then put light on it if it will start..ideas????**)

Pull out the no. 1 spark plug, put your finger over the hole, turn the engine over by hand until pressure develops. Look at your timing mark on the front and adjust to 0 deg TDC.
Now align your rotor of your distributor to point to no. 1 spark plug wire and re-insert.
Point the timing light and your done.
This saves you from the mess of pulling the cover.

To pull my hand I will need to pull all plugs? The compression is high...

Not if you turn it slow. Just no 1 plug. All your testing for is for the compression stroke on the no 1 cylinder.

When he says turn by hand he means with a socket on the balancer bolt and a long ratchet or breaker handle... or a friend could bump the starter for you...

Sorry, I assumed too much.
I wouldn't suggest the bumping starter method with your hand down in the engine compartment, but you could be very careful.

Just remember to remove the wrench before you test start it! (don't ask why I say that.)

I just thought that with the compression I have it would be hard to (turn my hand) wrench...I got it:LOL:

As you rotate the engine VIA the long ratchet you'll hear the compression leaking by the rings in the sealed cylinders. As it leaks down you'll be able to turn it. You won't be able to turn it fast but then you should only need to turn it less than 2 revolutions.

You can also rotate the engine by putting it in 4th (1:1 gear) and pushing the car forward. Avoid rotating the engine in the incorrect direction.
