Finally, somebody with the correct answer to the OP's question.

Forget all those opinions about correct tires, race set up. Blah, Blah, Blah. You need seat time and instruction from a qualified instructor. Not a racer an instructor. Racers know how to race, instructors know how to teach.

Yeah, no one before him said anything about instruction or prep.

Another vote for autocrossing and the use of a good instructor. Reading doesn't hurt. Tires and brakes are still the most important components in a car. Learn the basics before trying to push the car too hard. If you find you're scaring yourself (and others) too often, slow down a little. You can have a lot of fun in these machines without being dangerous. Just my opinion. :p Rich

I also like the idea of taking the car to a big parking lot and going a little crazy with it.....

Cranky is right about the difference between instructors and drivers......at my first drivers school I had a hero who spent most of the day bragging about how fast he was and telling us all kinds of stories about his (as it turned out) way too ambitious braking points....specifically I remember him telling me that turn 1 at Road America was a flat in 4th gear turn......it turned out that it may have been in his car as his car was bog slow but trying it in anything remotely competitive was a sure crash. A real dunce.

Way back in the old days a friend and I would take our cars to the university
parking lot when school was out and after a snow - and go skating with our cars. Great way
to get dialed in for the snow season and reflexes refreshed. This was way
before I moved to Hawaii.
