Spats I Made - What Do You Think?

Below are pictures of some spats I made for my new Backdraft. I have the 3M protection but that looked so nice I wanted to protect that also. I like the look of leather Spats too. I used a very soft leather and sewed a soft cotton material on backside. They Attach to Cobra with velcro in wheel well and velcro under back decklid. Since the leather is so soft it stretches and actually makes a pretty tight fit. I have not had a chance to drive with them on yet....hopefully they stay on at 100mph.

Just put velcro in wheelwell and under back decklid. The other side of velcro was sewn onto the Spats. I am actually surprised how nicely the velcro holds them on. You can pull on them to stretch them tight and it holds great.

I thought about taking orders but would need a pattern for every different Cobra. The Backdraft also has a very smooth wheelwell on the inside so the velcro sticks good on it. Not sure how other Cobras are. I bought the commercial grade Velcro from Fleet Farm when I was traveling this week in Stevens Point Wisconsin. I'm sure most velcro would work but you want one with a very sticky adhesive.

Jay from Vintage had the 3M installed when I bought the car from him

i have a contemporary, thought about the era spats...not sure what the fit would be. finishline seems to be what most choose--not an easy find, i can see why you made your own.

Did you use a standard sewing machine or an industrial machine?
Thanks

CowtownCobra 04-03-2011 05:28 AM

FFR makes the best stick-on spats. Just trim to fit your brand.

Used industrial machine that has been used for boat canvas mostly.

Have you tested them at highway speeds?
Do they flop or move?
You've inspired me to add these to my car.
Nice Job!

Nice Job!

I tested them at 65 plus mph and they did not flap around at all. I am actually shocked at how well they did turn out. I was trying this just as a last resort because I could not find anyone that made them.

snowgear,

Did you at least keep the BDR pattern for yourself? The first one's the toughest.
Having patterns for BDR, SPF and FFR would probably maximize your 'investment of time/business' ratio.
:)

Yes, I have a pattern and have spent the last few hours making some more Spats for a possible opportunity. I will see how they do and then look at other manufactures if there is enough interest. The only problem in going to other manufactures is I would need a Cobra from those manufacturers close by so I can make sure I get it right. I want to make sure the quality and fit are perfect if I am going to do them.
