Hello All,
I have Superformance 2765 and I have a rear end leak. What I would like to do is get it on a lift and run it to 60 or so, hold there until I see where the leak is coming from. The leak appears to come from the driver side of the Dana 44. My question to anyone who knows is: will I hurt the cv joints running in the fully extended position? What I have heard is Dana 44s are a bit*h to seal. Thanks, Cliff

A. You don't want to be under there-idle in neutral is scary enough.
B. Yes the joints will beat themselves to death.

What if you replaced the (rear) shocks and springs with a solid piece of bar stock (drilled for mounting) at a length that would hold the hubs at what ever elevation you wanted (i.e. no droop)? I would also remove the (rear) tires and wheels to reduce rotating mass.

Better idea: add oil dye to the diff and drive it until warm. Then you'll see the source. No matter from where, you've gotta pull the diff to change the seal anyway. Or put banana peels in the housing...

The dye idea sounds good. I was going to suggest just clean it all down then go for a run. Straight away put it back on the lift and spot the leak.

Being under when driveline is in motion is scarry. What I'd suggest is cleaning the suspected area with ZEP or Brakeclean. Drive the car a ways and then jack it up and look it over. I work heavey mobile equipment and this is a common problem. Loose pinion bearings,bad seals or installations, gaskets, andthe easiest to fix is grease flowing down the splines and out the pinion yoke nut.

I cranked mine up for the first time this spring today. I have it up on jacks so i don't flat spot the tires. I was out of the car giving it gas with the carb linkage. After about 4-5 minutes and a couple of half throttle revs i noticed that it was in first gear. No vibration and hardly any noise. Is mine set up wrong? I hear a lot about the axle joints beating themselves out but mine don't seam to be that way. I would not recomend getting under it while in gear especially at wheel speeds of 50-60 mph. Too much rotating energy and chances to get wrapped up in your project. I would go with the dye and all the safety of a lift with out the car running.

I have a few suggestions:

A. Change your fluid to royal purple, run it once and see where the purple fluid is coming from. You will get two main benefits, 1. the best and most protective diff fluid and 2. it's color will give you the same benefits as the dye. I agree with everyone else in that running it up on a lift is very dangerous and not worth the risk.
B. You may be able to run your car on a dyno ($90-$100) and see where the oil comes out from using mirrors. You can use a mirror with a handle, what many techs use when working on cars. This is similar to what dentists use, just a bit larger.
