Best microfiber towel ?
In your opinion, who has the best quality & safest,...microfiber towel and why ?

If you want to take it to the 'N"th degree....
When you purchase one, they are usually edged in a cotton material piping. Remove a length of the thread used to hold on the edging and using a match or lighter to see if it burns or melts. Cotton will burn and polyester will melt. You don't want polyester thread on the rag because it scratches. If you drop it on the ground while working with it, start a fresh rag until the dropped rag is cleaned. Amazing what it picks up off the ground when dropped. After washing the rag, inspect each rag for foreign material before reusing... Almost as bad as dropping a paint clay bar on the ground and then continuing to use it.... |
I use the microban Kimberly-Clark Wypall 83620 they do not leave any marks on my clear coat.

Damn, I just use a ratty old shop rag.
So that's where all those scratches came from. |

I'd also suggest having Multiple colours for different areas of the car!!
Split the car into 3 to 4 Levels or types of bodywork.... YELLOW for bodywork above the axle line! Brown or Gray for any areas below axle line. RED.....for areas such as Wheels and Mechanical Surfaces BLUE...for Glass and interior. As was mentioned before it is amazing what these rags can and do pickup...If you drop it get a clean one!! May seem a bit anal for some but I've attended a couple of detailing workshops with Damien Angelucci of Final Inspection Auto DetailingFinal Inspection - Auto Detailingand it is amazing the lengths these Guys go to!!...The Cloth suggestions come from Damien. Diaper cloths, I like microfibers for washing / applying wax only.
Diaper cloth does a better job on wax buffing IMO. |
Another tip I recently learned...do not throw your microfibers in the dryer. They pick up lint and thread from your clothes...which can potentially scratch paint. Air drying after hand washing is best.

you can use the dryer. just make sure the only thing in there are micro fiber cloths. do not mix with other towels.. Griots also make a good micro fiber cleaner.

the golden rules
I was working in a booth at the sf car show one year and I saw these guys that were professional detailers , I aked how they got the cars so perfect and they all said the same thing 1 never touch your car with anything but a microfiber 2 pull the tag if it has one off immediatly 3 if you drop it its done use it to check the oil or something ( i wash them and use them upstairs to clean the windows) 4 always use a new one one wet to wash and one to dry and polish .
Back in the day microfiber cloths were expensive like 10.00 a piece and the brand they all used was dragon fiber , these guys were the best at what they did and I have followed their advice and have been amazed at the results ..WD |
Ditto on the cloth diapers. I have found nothing that works better.
