An Original Super Snake with a Cammer

March 4 issue of National Dragster has a good article on the Cammer and the "other" Super Snake. This image is full of Snakes! Can't figure out how to make it a large image so maybe someone with"authority" can yank it out of my image gallery and do it justice.

Sorry for the large size. Couldn't locate a smaller link.

The most iconic photo EVER of Prudhomme driving this particular top fueler.

dang, that dude is wearing a gas mask. I guess the fumes are pretty bad.

rodneym 04-26-2011 03:40 PM

Those fumes will sting your eyes bad, too.
Any of you retired vets know that mask?
Doesn't look like an M40, M17 or an M9.

The Shelby Super Snake Top Fuel dragster became the first car in NHRA competition to break the 6 second quarter mile time barrier and won the 1966 NHRA Spring Nationals.

Damn another reminder of getting older.Remember meeting the Snake,Big Daddy, and other big names back in the 60's when at the strips all the time. One of my all time favorite engines "The Cammer 427" Looked for one when building my Big Block Cobra, price scared me away.

Here's a pic that shows the TF mask a little better. It not a military GM but one designed for extreme heat protection and filtering of nitromethane fumes. There are lots of different variations of this as well.

Standard fare for rear engined Top Fuelers of the 60's & early 70's until the driver was put in front of the engine. I believe it was Don Garlits that initiated it after a flywheel explosion severed part of a foot.

Thanks, lovehamr.
For some reason I wouldn't have suspected that for being waaaaay back in the 60's. ;)
