Any one used exhaust wrap?
I know it will give my car a unique mummy look, but I want to protect my kids while they are small. I figure I can take it off when they are a little older.

The main problem with exhaust wraps is they trap moisture and rust out your pipes after a while. I have never heard of "Lava Wrap"; who knows, maybe they're different. Most Cobra owners rely on ceramic coatings (to reduce the heat) and experience. Few normal kids will touch a hot Cobra pipe twice! Bill Stradtner |

They also make heat shields for sidepipes, I would stay away from any wrap - sllib has it right.

Heat shields would be a more desirable way to protect your kids' shins (and your pipes) than covering them with a wrap. The best thing to do though, is to continually emphasize and remind the lil' fellas about the hot pipes. Bring it up every time you are around the Cobra or whenever it comes up in conversation. Kids are sponges for knowledge and there are many dangerous things in life that we take it for granted they are reasonably safe from simply because they have been taught to avoid them. Snakebite from a hot pipe hurts - but it's not terminal; and like others have said, the first one is usually the last. I remember the first (and last) time I let my leg touch the pipe on a motorcycle. I was about four or five and my aunt had just made a visiting policeman give me a short ride around the grounds of our hotel. Nobody had ever told me and it never occurred to me on my own that the nice shiny thing would be so hot. Burned me real good. I remember fighting hard not to cry in front of the policeman, and my respect for hot exhaust pipes endures to this day.:LOL: |

I don't want to go into personal details but my youngest, four year old, has significant health issues. He does not need some old fashioned learning. He has been through more then most us.
I realize learning through experience has been down played in our country, For those of us with kids that are not 'normal' we are very sensitive. I appreciate all the amazing help I have received from club cobra. it is a great community. With respect, Mike V |
Apologies if there was any perception of insensitivity Mike. None of it was intentional - we simply had no way of knowing about your situation.
I've seen some homemade heatshields using large hose/pipe clamps, insulating material and sheet steel that looked real neat and tidy. Paint them flat black to match the pipes and it should look and work pretty good. You have a beautiful car from a great manufacturer. I hope you really enjoy it and that all goes well with the little fella. |

I used DEI's titanium wrap on the exhaust on my Sucker Punch Sally 66 Bobber. It looks great and was easy to install. I sprayed the pipes with their silicon spray before wrapping to prevent rusting. I get lots of compliments. The pipes are still hot, but not hot enough to burn you. The color of the titanium wrap is a dull gold.
Don't use their metal tie wraps. They are junk. I used hose clamps with the smooth side out. Works great. For the large diameter Cobra pipes, the 2" would probably be better. I used 1" on the mc pipes. |

I've used wrap on two cars and have never had a problem with moisture or rust. "Traps moisture"- your exhaust runs well over 400F and any moisture will be evaporated off, if this was the case your oil would also be full of moisture.
Works great and does reduce surface temp. |
I have my ceramik coated exhaust headers wrapped and the reduced heat inside the engine compartment is obvious. It reduces noise too and It also helps you fiberglass body from getting too much heat. I also have the inside of the fenders in the engine compartment covered with heat shield.

Sorry, just reread that you want the wrap for the sidepipes. Dont know how that would look like, but it would surely protect against burns.
Unfortunately these wraps are fragile and with scuffing and water and the driving wind they will eventually partially desintegrate and with time your cobra will look a little ragtag. |
After riding motorcycles (Harley) for near 50 yrs and can remember wife,motherinlaw and a couple more women who have my brand on their legs,shields and wrap have been on all my bikes since.
The Cobra with 460 and custom built racing headers (JetHot coated) have all the pipes wrapped because they cross under the oil pan.Been that way since mid 90's all is well. |
I can say & yell HOT ! in 2 languages while pointing at the HOT ! object.
That is the extent of my effort to keep the clueless off of something HOT . |
