Kirkham to Australia ?

I am in the process of selling my Kirkham. I have a request from a gentleman in Australia for a copy of my registration papers and photo of the compliance plate. I am assuming the compliance plate means the VIN plate. Is this a harmless request or is there a potential for some sort of fraud here? Thanks

Not that sinister in Australia !

Given the nightmare to register a Kirkham in Australia, he probably needs confirmation of Build year and rego proof , before he can even get an Australian import approval and then the nightmare begins.

He also needs export approval from the States , so scamming you out of your car is highly unlikely.

Good luck to him, it would be good to see another beautiful car here.

How does that work if it is registered as a 1965 Cobra? I would assume that it makes things a whole lot easier for import to Australia as opposed to importing one titled as a 05, 06, ... model Kirkham.

NO!!!!....Import will be assessed on year of Manufacture not the fact it is currently titled as a '65.....That loop hole is well a truly closed!!!

It doesn't matter what year a car is "plated" or "titled" or any other such indistinct term. For Australian import purposes what is vital to establish is the year the BUILD of the car was completed.

Regarding your query about the VIN plate, cars in Australia come with a VIN plate verifying that vehicle's I/D number but there is also a further plate attached to the vehicle showing its month and year of manufacture, so unless whatever plate you have on your Kirkham states this information as well, and you have some sort of official regulatory documentation to back it up, it is unlikely to be considered by our authorities. And then, as Soulman has alluded to, it is at this point that the nightmare to try to gain their approval to import truly begins.

Where it is a fairly painless process to establish the age and credentials of a factory car like a '68 Chevelle or a '71 Mustang etc, it is an entirely different and difficult undertaking to prove the build date or provenance of an individually constructed vehicle to the satisfaction of our import authorities.

They have become increasingly vigilant in recent times with the import of ICVs to the extent that it is now virtually impossible for the average car enthusiast to bring a modern day ICV into the country. It is a constant source of frustration to us to see some of the mouth-watering beauties advertised on Cobra Country that must remain a dream because of our onerous import restrictions. It is doubly galling seeing that for the first time in ages the exchange rate between our respective currencies actually favours Australia, thus putting some of the most desirable Cobras within the financial reach of Oz Cobra devotees for the first time.

How do they know what year it was completed if it is titled as a 65? Do they really know its not a 65 Cobra? Just curious.

When a car exits the States so does its history with DMV as record, i believe Australia and the States has some sort of agreement in place to check records ,seeing how much stuff comes over here from the US.

My car was spotted straight away , because it only had a small amount of history in the States.

Even without said agreement ...they look for Classified advertisements, any financial transactions to and from here...If car was advertised at $50K and you neg a $40K price they will ask question the official paperwork and question it again even when substantiated and then hold car once here and question it again!!!!!

I think it would be easier to import one over as a rolling chassis /parts and complete the build here
