I got a response from Holley and here it is. I have decided to change the pump to a 15psi unit. I didn't spend the extra time and money installing a pressure regulator and return line for nothing. ;)

From Holley Tech deparment
"If you are using a Holley carb, 6 psi should be fine. Since that pump has a simple non-adjustable spring loaded bypass, a 1 psi pressure difference from the rated 7 psi wouldn''t be uncommon."

personally i stopped using holley pumps 10 years ago for the same reason you are experiencing. they have the consistency of a wet turd.....

have been using the mallory 140 gph with a regulator on 2, 4bbl's have it set at around 5.75 and no problems ever.

just sayin'

As I mentioned earlier, another option is to replace the stock spring that controls the bypass valve in the pump with a stronger one of the same size. That will prevent the internal pressure regulator from opening so soon.
