Solid or Hydraulic?

So I've been adjusting my valvetrain for the past year assuming (was told) I had a solid lifter FE 428. Today I found this. Looks like a two piece lifter with a spring in between. Is this a type of solid or is it hydraulic?

Side note: I pulled it out because 3 of the 16 had a retaining clip that came loose.

Huh. So you've been running your hydraulics with, say, .018" lash, but it probably didn't keep that lash, which I can see throwing you for a loop. Well, probably no real harm done and now's a good time to change out the cam and lifters to something you'd really like (and know what it is). You might check in with Blykins -- he's a recent convert to solid flat tappets for his own personal build and he will no doubt give you a nice deal on a nice package.

No convert here and the guys that want to run a cam like mine are going to be in for a lot of expense.

How do the lobes look? Are they damaged? If the lobes look fine, then you can throw a new set of hydraulic lifters in there and do the break-in dance.

That's what I figured.

I did have a few that wouldn't keep a consistent lash :)

Lobes look good at least.

Brent, looks like I may be doing that intake/carb and now cam swap we talked about a few months back.

I'll be giving you a call.

Thanks everyone for your input!
