CSX 2603--- The SEVENTH Coupe (or so I was told)

At Supercar Sunday, some guy had a bare aluminum Daytona Coupe with the CSX 2603 on the footbox, and was saying it was the seventh coupe. I asked my source about it, and he said that the NUMBER 2603 was sold by Shelby to one of Shelby's friends, and that he thought the Coupe was made in Australia.

FWIW LOL!

Ohlsen coupe. Not an original.

This was an April Fool's prank a few years back. I think Ron (Computerworks) started it.

Apparently correct apart from the bit about it being built in Australia, [ but us kiwis are used to the Ozzies claiming anything good about NZ as their own.] Car was built on the 2603 chassis apparently from all the articles I have read on it with Shelbys blessing at the time. Ohlsen went to the trouble of having uprights cast/forged locally along with casting his own wheels. Has also done an FIA Cobra which I believe was also given a continuation number, It [ The FIA ] has raced in NZ classic events & had a rather spectacular crash at one meeting that could have been ugly had it landed upside down.
As your probably aware John Ohlsen died before the Daytona was totally complete & was finished by his wife & son who worked with him at Ohlsen Developements. The alloy bodywork on the Daytona was done by 'Classic Car Restorations' in Auckland NZ. The body on this car appears to be a bit 'bulkier' around the rear end than other Daytonas, perhaps hard to understand for someone in USA today, but IIRC John also built the 'Buck' for the Williment Cobra Daytona in the UK, and when you compare it to the 'original six' there are quite a few differences also. Door openings etc are clearly those of the 'first' USA built car. Have a pic of car but it wont upload for some reason, will add website later..Car Restoration, Car Fabrication, Replicas and Coachbuilding - Classicar Restorations Ltd ..... its under replicas on the site.

Okay, so what would this car be worth?

You asking me , I have no idea, I dont even know whether the original agreement between Shelby/Ohlsen & the person who apparently commissioned the build would be honoured in todays marketplace. The original 2603 chassis will have a value, but for what? You say you talked with the owner at the meet, was he the guy who commissioned the build or a subsequent owner? I do have the original owners name somewhere in a magazine article, Ford Dealer IIRC.

I just overheard the owner say it was the seventh Coupe...I didnt have enough info to question him any further.

I don't think there was an "original" 2603 chassis. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
As I know the story, Ohlsen was a mechanic for Shelby and asked Shelby if he could build a Daytona and use the chassis number CSX2603. Shelby agreed and the car was built. I think it's about 11 or 12 years old.
A guess on value would be something around the McClusky coupes. Maybe do a search and see what they're selling for.
