Heim Joint Thread Question
If i have a 3/4"-16 heim joint that has a 1-3/4" thread length and is being used on a tubular upper control arm that is not under any spring load, what percentage of those threads should be threaded into the tubular upper control arm?
Other details of said heim joint. Ball Material Information Heat-Treated Chrome-Plated 52100 Bearing Steel Race Material PTFE/Kevlar Race Material Information Self Sealing Liner Material Without Liner Shank Thread Size 3/4"-16 Inside Diameter (A) 5/8" Outside Diameter (B) 1-3/4" Overall Thickness (C) 3/4" Center-to-Base Length (D) 2-7/8" Thread Length (E) 1-3/4" Housing Thickness (F) 9/16" Maximum Ball Swivel (6° to 22°) 13° Static Radial Load Capacity 31,680 lbs. |
Hi Chris, I use 1.5 times the thread diameter as a general rule. That would be 1-1/8" in this case. I assume your talking rear upper outer? They have most of the load radially on them and it's compressive so not a big concern.

As a machinist, I also have been told, one and one half times the thread diameter.

Actually, this would be for a 67 mustang. The shock towers are altered and i was just kicking some ideas around for using a TCP suspension system, but i dont think it is possible due to the way the towers have been modified. In order to get the alignment close to correct, the rear heim joints on the upper control arms would need to thread in at least 9/16th of an inch. If i could find longer heim joints in the same configuration i could make it work, but i havent found any yet.
