what is the best octane boost that we can still get now that the EPA has taken all of the good stuff off the shelves?

You won't like it.... Ethanol. E85 is over 100 octane. You have to make sure your fuel system can take the high ethanol (no rubber, all steel). You may also be surprised to hear E85 may only have 70% ethanol. Pretty funny.

I quit using that stuff years ago and just add a little of my racing gas to the tank. It seems to add a lot of power and I get better gas mileage. None of the additives we get up here are worth the price of the bottle they are in.

I have 10.5/1 compression in my 302 and run a 50/50 mix of turbo blue and premium fuel........ she likes it.

You can add toluene. Thats what most of the octane boost products were anyway...

I came up with these formulas from a Turbo Buick Web Site. They did stress the need for a good respirator and caution since the fumes are carcenigens (sp)
Toulene with 92 octane gasoline 10%....94.2 octane 20%....96.4 octane 30%....98.6 octane Xylene with 92 octane gasoline 10%,,,,,94.5 octane 20%.....97.0 octane 30%.....99.5 octane Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE) with 92 octane gasoline 10%.....94.6 octane 20%.....97.2 octane 30%.....99.8 octane The site also stresses that higher concentrates do not improve the ratings and may be hazardous to vehicle and/or operator. I understand that these chemicals may be available at chemical suppliers or some paint supply stores. Sure beats paying $5-$10 for a can of booster that will only raise your octane rating 2/10ths or 3/10ths of one octane. |
If you really believe you need an Octane Booster - this is the stuff to get - Kemco. Not cheap and won't win you any points with the environmentalists. Has to be mail ordered. Real lead for off-road use.
