Failed Tach
Last week I turned the key on and the needle swung to 4000 Rpm and then dropped to 2000 Rpm. All this without the engine even being started. From that point it did not function properly. I sent it to be repaired and was told the circuit board had failed due to a voltage spike. I'm having difficulty with this as I have redundant grounds and it has worked flawlessly for 5+ years, as have all other electrics. Can someone elaborate as to how a voltage spike can occur without the alternator energized and functioning. It was suggested by the repair tech to put a 3 amp fast blow fuse.

Curious, what brand? |
It started life years ago as a Stewart Warner, then it originaly failed I sent it off to have the internals changed. It lasted 5+ years. I was told they installed a VDO circuit board and other part. It has worked very well. The car has the basics as far as electrical; fan, lights, horn, dash lights, MSD 6T ignition. The fan did NOT click on, as the key was turned in this sitation. It had been driven 100 miles and had sat for an hour, while we were in the restaurant.
