winter care and feeding of Goodyear billboards
I'm running the goodyear billboards, love them, couple of questions as the beast goes into winter storage:
1) it gets a bit cold here, will temps below freezing harm the tire? 2) I've noticed some cracking in the sidewalls, basically where the tread area meets the sidewall, almost as if they were a re-tread. Any serious issues with that? (sorry no pics) Cheers, |

I agree with Chas.
If you can, use nitrogen instead of compressed air in tires. Much, much better for the tires, especially with bias-ply's. |

I love them too. If you talk to Goodyear tire reps like Roger Krause or Pat Versace they call it ozone cracking and tell you it doesn't harm the integrity of the tire. It does look a little scary though.

At risk of being redundant, I was at Competition Tire South in Daytona yesterday to buy a set of Billboards and asked about this specific thing. Comp Tire is essentially "Goodyear". The unofficial word is it is purely cosmetic and nothing to worry about.
He also shared something I had never heard of. He said to wipe down the inside of the tire with dish detergent. Just wipe it down and leave it. Then mount the tire just as it is. He said it seems to help the pores of the rubber seal up better. My first set of Billboards would lose a fair amount of air over a short period of time. Doing this supposedly helps with that. He said it was "an old drag racer's trick". He had a bottle of Dawn in the cabinet. Jim |
Use duct tape to fill in the cracks. It fixes evertyhing.

LOL- duct tape, bondo- the quality of advice is always top notch here! :)

rather than jacking up, years ago I saw some pads you drive on, the pad is curved to the same shape as the tire, supposedly stops flat spotting since the tire is supported in its proper curved shape. Anyone seen these/used them?
