Tachometer
I have been gathering the necessary parts for a nice Mechanical Tach setup.
Anyone using one, opinions?

Hey Rick!
Why mechanical? Because it's more vintage?

Yea I guess. Not sure it's the right decision, but we'll see.

Rick, I've owned one car with a mechanical tach (a 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster). The cable, that was just like a speedo cable, screwed in to the base of the distributor. 1) It broke a lot; 2) It made the needle bounce a lot at idle; 3) I question whether it was accurate; 4) It leaked oil on one end or the other, I can't remember, heck, maybe both. That's the only experience I have with mechanical tachs.:(

Datsun 2000 in it's day was a good runner. Especially if you had the 2 double throated Solex carbs.

Rick: I had a mechanical set-up in my 65 Vette. It was standard with a single point distributor. I changed to an Accel dual point distributor and was able to get a mechanical setup there as well. It was very accurate and I never had problems with breaking the cable. If I recall, there was a particular way to snake the cable through the firewall and also a brace that was used to keep the curve of the cable, thus eliminating any movement from high revs or engine movement.

The rear would come loose on it easier than it does on my Cobra. At least my Cobra has a Smiths Electric Tach -- it doesn't leak any oil.
