Still using lock washers?

A very good web site on bolts. Great info on lock washers...

Bolt Science Web Site

Carrol Smith wrote an excellent book, "Nuts, Bolts, Fastners, and Plumbing Handbook". You learn all kinds of things by reading that book. One of them is, don't use a split lock washer except in a few circumstances.

I use to use split lock washers on a regular basis...not prefer the "star" type lock washers. Most of the time I use the style with the tangs on the inside, although every now and then the one with the tangs on the outside seem to work better.

Strange to see that the bolt only lasted longer....is it just fatigue on the split lock washer over time?

Cheers!

I am probably going to get flamed for this but here go's anyway.

I have used lock washers all of my life and I do not plan on stopping anytime soon. I have "never" had a bolt come loose that had a lock washer on it. As long as they still work for me I will keep using them.

Me too. I grew up on a farm and the lock washers never failed.

You'll never find a split lock washer on a REAL race car. I subscribe to AN flat washers and Elastic stop nuts. Full height nuts in tension 1/2 height in Shear. Buy them on line or at your local aircraft supplier. Carrol Smith's book is one in a series that is focused on preparing race cars, using the correct fasteners being a huge part.

Never Had One Fail?

This information bears out my experiences. After completing my Arntz in 1986, I have driven it hard in Solo2 events, classic car tours and many rallies. Virtually every component has failed in some way over the 25 years I have been thrashing it. I have learned to never depend on one locking system for a critical bolt. For example, the nuts that hold the half shafts to the differential flange are locknuts with lock washers and blue thread locker. That's three ways they are secured. Why? Because they came loose once. Even the castellated nuts on the MG front suspension get thread locker before they are torqued and then the cotter pins goes in. Why? Because when they come loose, the holes in the suspension arms become slots and the steering gets loose. It has happened on all almost the bolts that I trust to flat washers and lock washers. Non-critical parts like the side pipes are ok. If they get loose, they rattle and you know to tighten them up. This is great information, David, thank you.

I haven't reviewed the entire "Bolt Science" web site but offer this info on Nord Locks
Nord-Lock Demonstration Video - YouTube

I'm now using them on the header to side pipe connections. Lock washers kept coming loose.

I learned never to re-use lock washers.....:JEKYLHYDE

Thanks for the info!

We also used safety wires on some tractor parts. Never had either fail.

I guess that the main thing is to use what works for you. Thanks for the link Tom. Gives everyone information and options.

I do whatever Tom says to do when it comes to cobras and nuts and bolts.:D

Me too until I discovered Loctite, now use it almost exclusively.Exceptions tractors and farm equipment, and certain other places where a locknut seems to work better.Experience has taught me all I need to know.
