Ring and Pinion for Jag
I have an early Jag center section. Actually, 2 of them. Both are the Salisbury units. After searching through this site, I cannot seem to come to a finite conclusion what needs to be done to put the Dana ring and pinion in this center section...or even if it can be done.
Has anybody done this? If so, what exactly needs to be done? If not, is there still a source for ring and pinions for this early style carrier? I have a 4 series posi and a 3 series. I'm looking for either a 3.70 for the 3 series, or a 3.90 for the 4 series. I believe the split between carriers is that size range. Thanks! |
You need to speak to Kurt Hamilton (818-943-2323). His shop is near the Van Nuys airport. He has tons of Jag stuff and bult a really solid rear end for my car. Kurt makes sleeves to adapt the Dana gear to the Jag diff.

I believe the ring gears can be changed one way but not the other. The bolt holes that hold them to the carrier are a different size. You can make holes bigger but it's hard to make them smaller.

When I was researching this, somebody told me they make a bushing for the units that take a smalller bolt and I believe also that somebody also makes a shouldered bolt that has the proper sized shaft and thread size for the Dana 44 to later Salisbury conversion.
Wish I could remember who had them available but you might try Coventry West to get some info on this install. Bob |
Go to the 4 wheel drive guys
joyridin' I did an internal swap of carriers to a 30 spline setup. Jeep Dana rears are the same housing as a Dana 44. The differents is the bolt spacing and threads into the ring gears. The rest is setup the same way. If you are going to be hard on the car like racing, go to the 30 spline carrier and what gear you want. Mark Williams sells the 30 spline stub shafts out of the center section. These are good for about 700HP. Also add a rear cover support to control cap walking of the rear. his is also in the 4 wheel drive mags. Summit and LPM makes them. Need to have a new vent tube for the cover. Been running same rearend for 14 years with a locker, no problems. I side note, setup the back lash tight to stop gear crash and breaking parts. .007" -.010" is spec. I run at .003" Just enough for heat expandsion. How smooth you drive will tell how long the rearend will hold up to abuse. Softness of tires are also a MAJOR factor of rearend life. I run a 200 wear Pilot for street class. That's the limit. If you want to do burn out to impress the friends, add a water kit and bars to spray the rear tires and help save the drivetrain. Rick L.

Thanks all. I did some searching on the web after I wrote this. It is my understanding that the Dana gears bolt up to my particular unit. This came from a Jag website. The problem is the front u-joint yoke. The Dana gears have a 26 spline pinion and the Jag has a 10 spline on the early units. I have to buy a yoke. That seems to be the only issue. I guess I just have to order the gears and wing it.
No racing or even heavy abuse Rick. The 4.56 were too much and the 3.23 gears were too low for the T56 6 speed. I need about a 3.7-3.9 ratio to have a usable 1st and 6th gear. |
