New Purolator Oil Filter for Synthetics:
Something to keep an eye on - I have used synthetic oil since the late 80's on my daily driver vehicles. This is a new filter by Purolator & it may be a good one: Filter designed for synthetic oils | Truck Parts & Service | Trucking Aftermarket | Heavy-Duty Truck Parts and Services

Best oil filter on market after reviewing filtration rates, construction and pressure drop is royal purple
|
Seems like a good filter but not the best available as many top tier filters are rated 99.9% at 20 microns. Seems like marketing hype to me. :JEKYLHYDE

Actually, I don't think it is too bad..depending on the price. Filters are all over the place as far as filtering efficiency. One is 15 microns at 98%, another is 20 microns at 99%, another is 25 microns at 97.5%. The key is none of them have the same numbers. You would need to know what they all do at say 99% to get an accurate comparison.
Buy one of the better filters and you can't go wrong. |
If you are looking for maximum filtration of about less that 1 micron, Amsoil may have what you are looking for: AMSOIL - By-pass Oil Filter Mounting Kits

think i'll stick with mobil 1.
there, we covered them all:D |
Oil Questions
What is the bypass rating?
Relief valve opening pressure? Does the bypass opens at 14 psi allow the oil to bypass the filter? Then how much oil is really filtered? If our motors have 50 psi on the oil system how does this work? I understand that the manufactory build a bypass into their filters because people do not change the filters and they clog up stopping any oil from passing thru. Thus lawsuit for a new motor, because I to dumb to take care of my old motor! Bypass iPreuusure is differential across filter. Most at operating temp has diff pressure across filter less than 1 psig. Even at40f only 2 or 3 psig.
|
You would always prefer bypass over oil starvation so go with lower bypass, most are 9-11psig. Good thing about FL-1A style filters is they are clean side bypass, most are dirty. I have never seen anything over 3psig differential across mine, I had some gauges before and after and did extensive testing. Royal purple has syntheic media, wire mesh maintaining pleat spacing etc. they actuall sent their filtration charts to me including flowrate vs pressure drop. at 8 gpm they are like 3 psig at 212F 10W30. I thing motorcraft FL-1A was 6 psig.

Maxx;
Enlighten me on this. How could you have a clean side bypass? Doesn't the bypass allow oil to bypass the filter from the input side to the output side when the pressure drop is higher than rated? Thanks, |
We need an oil filter poll.
|
Clean side bypasses without going across the dirty side of the filter, oil enters and discharges to clean side most discharge via a button on bottom of filter look in some you will see it, you flush you dirty oil right to the clean side. Once again most never bypass so it's a non issue

Wix....if it's good enough for Top Fuel teams and NASCAR it's good enough for my car.

Oil filter
Racing oil filters like Wix generally filter down to 60 microns as flow is more important in a race engine that maybe pulled down after a couple of race meetings than fine filtering. I wasn't keen on that so went for a Canton oil filter who claim 45gpm flow and filtering down to 8 micron with their microfiber filter element also I can screw on a normal HP4 filter. Cantons microfiber filter element appears to have better filtering capabilities than paper elements.
