this is a photo of me sitting in a original s/c that just had a complete nut and bolt restoration.
The photo was taken in 1982 in Manasquan New Jersey.
This is what I remember, a friend of mine back then by the name of Chris Liebenberg don't quote me on the spelling :-)
who back then had restored a couple of s/c cobras and 350 GTs
he used to rent out part of my friend Tim large bodyshop on Route 72 in Manasquan.
I remember his work being amazing the attention to detail for a young guy was incredible.

This particular cobra he was restoring for an attorney I believe back then, just wondering I've had this photo since then and would like to know if anybody by chance would possibly have a guess on what exact CSX this car is if possible.
Or even if knowing what happened to Chris I last ran into him approximately 20 years ago and a remember him saying that he was currently a full-time restorer for some billionaire shipping mogul in New Jersey.

Thanks
Dennis

Tough to ID the car from that pic.

You may be referring to Chris Liebenberg...

yes thank you that's him I corrected the spelling. Do you know of him?

I figure it's worth a try being that there was only approximately 30 s/c total and I have location restorer and time details.

The only reference in the Registry to Chris working on a Cobra is in 2000, and that was on a Comp.

The flares on this car peg it as an S/C. No reference to that location, either....

Any more details you might remember?

not that I can remember I was only like paying half attention back then, I just remember I wish I had 1 ounce of Chris's patients he would spend so much time on one single part of the car it was crazy :-)he had an apprentice by the name of Robert I don't remember his last name.

Chris was a great guy and always had some sharp cars that he would buy and sell. we both were going to the County College and I really liked a beautiful black Pantera that he had and I remember him telling me I'll pick you up on the way to school so I was expecting to be picked up in the Pantera but he showed up in a immaculate Sunbeam Tiger and I remember being so disappointed , what the heck is this get smart vehicle , wheres the Pantera :-).would be great to get in touch with him again.

The car you were photographed in is CSX 3042. But the date is wrong, as it didn't get to Chris's shop until 1985. And thankfully, its owner at that time was not an attorney, nor does he plan to become one. And his associate was Robert Garcia.

Yes Robert Garcia WOW,so it was your car at one time?

CSX 3042

Robert was also an amazing mechanic I remember always trying to get him to work on whatever car I had at the time :-)

I was going by the date on the photograph I had a bunch of old photos that got wet I guess that was the kodak date on the back of the one on top of it.

Chris restored a few back then was this one a total restoration that he did, I don't remember? if so has it had a more recent restoration?

It's weird how only certain things stick out in my memory one of the ones he completed while test driving it lost a back wheel on the highway.

Ned, I'm glad I asked the question

Franklin mint made a miniature of it.

"This car, CSX3042, is regarded by many expert Cobra® collectors as one of the last 427 S/C®s sold, since it remained on the original dealer MSO into the 1970s before being sold to a private buyer. The CSX3042 is also regarded as one of the most original Cobras® in existence, faithfully preserved and maintained by Cobra® specialist, Ned Scudder. Today, this is the classic 427 S/C® against which all others are measured. With its trim and additional details that include the precisely styled headlights, it is among the rarest, most desirable S/Cs ever."

that was so nice of Chris to let me take it for the weekend, beating the pants off everything on the road back in 1985, just kidding :-)

I think if you look at the date on the photo it reads 1987 not 1982 ;)

There is something mildly unsettling about, given the copious records kept by SAAC, that we are citing a toy company catalog as a reference.

please give some of the copious comments by SAAC on the car, does it mention Chris restoring it?

Dennis

What Chris and Robert did was do some paint work. Earlier, I had the chassis, suspension, etc. redone at a shop in CT run by another Cobra friend, but we left the blue paint alone. The second owner had removed the white stripes that the car's first owner had on it, so I asked Chris to put them back on, and that was when you saw the car. Fifteen years later it was given a complete restoration, and that's when the gold stripes were applied.

Pretty sure I saw that car at a show in Princeton some years back. Had a six pack of King Cobra sitting on the seat. Maybe I was just hoping it was a six pack.

Were there a couple empty 40oz bottles on the floor?

Nedsel 02-29-2012 06:46 PM

Yep. Same car. That 6-pack of King Cobra beer (or "malt liquor") probably got pretty rancid over the years. There was certainly no one who wanted to drink the stuff.
