Jack Pads - Plates Inside or Outside?

I recently made a set of jack pads. They can be bolted on the car with the lifting plates toward the inside or outside. What is correct? I saw (in person) CSX3049 about five months ago. It had the front ones mounted with the plates towards the outside of the car, and the rear ones mounted with the plates towards the inside. Was this a mistake?
