Vehicle identification # vs. State identification # ???
Hi all
I’ve seen some nice pictures with a Kirkham 289 and stopped at two pictures, which raised some question marks.:confused: 2007 Kirkham Cobra 289 Replica Why are on this car two identification number tags? - Vehicle identification number from Kirkham KC6FNLxx (Image 53) - Assigned identification number from the State of Idaho 01377xx (Image 54) Is the Kirkham number not sufficient? What is the reason to have an additional identification number on the car as the Kirkham should be an unique number? Many thanks for bringing light in to this un-clarity! :) |
Because the Kirkham is sold as a kit, not a complete car. The Kirkham number is just their own way to identify the chassis. The state assigns a nationally-legal number to the "car" when it is registered.
|
It might also depend on the state or the person at the motor vehicle department. When my CR kit was built, CR had a tag on it with a 16 digit ID number. Ca (back in the early 90's) used that number for my registration ID number.

They did this to my truck(Completely Stock Nissan) when I moved into CA. For some reason the VIN wasn't good enough for them.
|
I can understand issuing a Ca VIN to a NEW kit car in Ca.
Issuing a new VIN to a previously registered one I cant understand and I really do not understand issuing a new VIN on your used Nissan. You guys in the know, how are VIN's issued on manufactured autos built by GM, Ford, Nissan, ------? |
Interesting.
This means that it more or less depends on the state or person…. -> There is no real legal reason for this change of #. |
