I am a dumb ass !!!

So I go into the garage this morning and notice that the front left tire on the Cobra is flat. I think "how can that be" I haven't driven it in two months. So I roll the air compressor over to fill it. I figured I'd just keep an eye on it and see what is going on. I get over to the tire and see that it has completely blown the top of the tread off and destroyed itself !!! WTF !!!

Then I rememberd that I have never replaced the front tires. I replaced the rear set a number of times . I got the car with 4,600 miles on it about 13 years ago. It now has 24,000 miles on it. The front tires visually always looked fine with no sign of any dry rot with nice smooth pliable rubber. But, . . these BF Goodrich Radial TAs were the original tires that were put on the car when it was built in 1992. So,, THEY ARE 20 YEARS OLD !!!!

Glad it blew sitting in the garage and not in a sweeping turn !

Now I have learned about old tires!

I appreciate your offer, but I think they will rub on the lip of the fender when I hit bumps.

thanks though!

no problem....
take a look at the M\T SR radial, they have comparable sizes to what you currently have...not a lot of choices out there for 15 inch rims.

20,000 miles in 13 years? You need to get out more. :)

Damn it Ed, when you're right, you're right. You are a dumbass! :p

I was too. Went out to the garage back in 02 to take a run in the Butler I had back then...gas all over the place. The 12 year old fuel bladder had decided to fall apart...most asspecially due to old age as much as the alcohol-laced octane enhancer I had been adding to it for autocrossing.

Course, the year before, two of the original handcut P7s that were put on the car when it was built in 83 (it was Butler No. 5) started crumbling.

Welcome brother dumbass. ;)

"I am a dumb ass !!!"

Dear CobraEd,

The D.A.C.A. (Dumb Ass Club of America) has reviewed your submission and regret to inform you that as of this time (and considering the long list of applicants ahead of you) you do NOT qualify to join our organization.
There was some speculation that you MIGHT qualify for our Apprenticeship program or maybe our Trainee program but quite frankly your faux pas was amateurish at best and could easily be categorized by our organization as "oversight" or "neglect" or "you're not doing enough Track Days".

Thank you for your interest in our organization.

well at least you have a goal to aspire to....

Dirty Harry 06-03-2012 07:08 PM

Well, I guess I'd better join the club too. I installed my T/A's in 1992 as well. I was going to make this their last summer, but I might go ahead and put new ones on before LCS, after reading your story. I thought I was the only one who had tires that were old enough to vote. I cover mine when the car is not in use to keep sunlight off them. They look fine, but... Thinking about Mickey T's.

Paul F 06-04-2012 08:34 AM

....installed in 1992. Ok then, I still have 3 more years on mine; installed in 1995!

This is a good reminder to all of us not to be a dummy.
