Speedometer went nuts - help

Back out of driveway and started forward. Speedometer went nuts, bouncing all over the place. Then it steadied out at 60 MPH (actual speed was about 20 MPH) for 5 or ten seconds. It dropped to zero then came up and stuck at 20 MPH. Next time I stopped, it dropped to about 15 MPH and has stayed stuck there.

The odometer is still working.

Speedometer is a VDO. Transmission has a cable running to speedometer, so I believe it is mechanical.

I was under the dash yesterday fishing some wires. I put 20 miles on it with everything working perfectly since then.

Any chance I bumped something loose or does it pretty much have to be a bad gauge?

Yes, the gauge is kaput. Probably repairable, but the cost might exceed a new one.

Speedometer cables can be annoying, especially when you notice the crazy gyrations coming from the speedometer needle that jumps, skips or does not move at all. The problem looks serious and might lead someone to think that the engine can be at fault. In reality, the problem almost always lies with a twisted or kinked speedometer cable, or a cable that has lost its lubrication through wear and age.
