Bearing issue?
Going to spend some time on the Cobra today. I have notice a rhythmic thump in my right front wheel...thought it was a flat spot on the billboards but it is still making it when I jacked it up and spun the wheel...hoping it's not a rotor

Ok...so when the wheel is on I here the "clunk" every rotation...pull it off and spin the hub and it's gone....any thoughts are appreciated

Tried to switch the wheels just to see if it was a wheel issue but it stills makes the noise

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. But - first make sure that the bearing clearance is adjusted correctly.

Is there any documented procedure for adjusting / replacing? The car only has less than a 1000 miles on it?

Kramer, I think what Bob is referring to is torqing down the axle nut to 20 ft/lbs and then loosening the nut back off, and then re-torqing it back down to 15 inch/lbs (yes, that's INCH/LBS) then if you can get a cotter pin in, do so and quit. If not, then tighten just enough to get the pin in and then quit.
If that's not what he's referring to then I'll just politely STFU.:LOL: |

Check a wheel weight isn't touching on the inside?

Thanks....I think I got it by following Patrick / era's advice....I'll drive it tomorrow and double check it

If you have stick on weights, check to see that the tape and adhesive is not failing. Or is a weight hitting a caliper?

Sounds like wheel weights
Kramer which size rotors are you running and what size rims are on the car? If you have 15" wheels and 12.0" rotors, the wheel weights will hit the caliper if they are stacked. Easy way is to just pull wheel and check for shining spots on weights or caliper. How much play is in wheel on this side of car? If you grap the top and bottom of the wheel there should be no more than 1/8" play top to bottom. If more, repack wheel bearings and adjust. Everyone has a different way to adjust bearings. Some use torque wrench, some use feel method, some go with luck. I use feel. Take nut down my hand, ( this is with bearings repack) rotate rotor until play is gone and then backoff to closest cotter pin opening in spindle. Your done. Bend both ends in different dictionals to lock nut. Road test and recheck. Too tight a bearing is as bad as too loose. Good luck Rick L.

If you have the optional 12" brakes and 15" pin-drive wheels, wheel-weight clearance could definitely be the problem. We use Wurth extra-thin weights with that combo. |
