Need feedback on expected performance from 289 Cobra
Im looking at buying the following and was curious what to expect for approx 0-60 time.
1997 build EM(Everitt Morrison) 289, claimed 300 HP Automatic, appears to be Hurst Ive researched and have seen a wide range. Will it be in the high 5 seconds? Better? Just curious what the degree of "kick in the pants" will be. My alternative car is a C5 Z06, and i know where that will be. Thanks for any thoughts. |
If you ask which one zero-to-60 is faster - the C5 it is, grasshopper.

...but serious, the C5 will outrun the 289 automatic for a a few reasons. Anyhow, guys here buy the 289 not for 0-60 times. They buy it for esthetic reasons. |
G-Pete is right...the 289 model has that lean, mean look about it, the 427 model looks fat and "bloated" to many of us (Hey, don't shoot the messenger, I drive a 427 model, it wasn't what I wanted, it was what was affordable at the time).
An acquaintance has a Unique 289 FIA model with a 351W that has been stroked to 427 CID....I bet that one does 0-60 in less than 6 seconds!! Cheers! Dugly :cool: |
I would guess low to mid 5's depending on your stall converter and gearing. Cheers.

I'm assuming this is an EM 427 body with the 289 in it? I wasn't aware EM makes a 289 body style.
Keeping in mind the EM's are relatively heavy compared to most kits, I would be surpised to see under 5 second 0-60 times with that drivetrain. Nothing wrong with the 289, just not the optimum set up for speed at that build level, IMHO. Bob |
If you want 0-60 performance a 300hp EM would be mellow ride. Z06 would most likely take it. There is more to cars than 0-60, if that is what you want don't buy a Cobra as it sounds like you are buying to be fast alone. Cobra's are raw, fast and utilitarian and no where near modern attributes as a C5 Z06. Cobra requires a like for the car itself, buy a Hemi-Dart as it will be a fast 1/4 miler...
My 289, correct for car, will be set up for track so 0-60 will not be a huge worry. 2nd-3rd and 3rd-4th will be a blast..... On a track equal to or better than Z06, on a strip more Pinto-like.... :LOL: |

It really isn't a comparison at all! The two cars couldn't be further apart from each other in all aspects. My old FIA was very quick, very nimble, very responsive BUT nothing compared to a newer vette. I never drag raced it but I would have thought it would have been pretty close. It's all good until it gets really hot from all that racing, then there's NO AC, no top, no radio, no air bags, no traction control, no remote shock adjustments, no power steering, no power brakes, no computer correcting the engine performance, no protection from smelling like raw fuel-brake dust-burnt oil, etc, etc. CRAP! I miss my old car NOW!!
NOW, it also depends on the quality of the build of the Cobra! Everyone here will agree that there are NEVER two Cobra's that are just the same unless it's a factory built high end model. There is a huge difference in between my old car and a friends car (his was a Everett Morrison)! I wouldn't be caught at all driving his car to ANY limits of speed, very unstable and loose. My car was incredible and I one I wished I could drive daily! If I ever hear of anyone comparing a Cobra to a Corvette, I'd tell them BUY THE VETTE. There isn't a comparison. There isn't a substitution either, well I'm wrong, a 67 Shelby GT 500 with a 427 Tunnel Port! Good luck with the search! Regards, Matt |
