Check ebay for a 3G. They have different mounts, and to some degree, you can disassemble and re index it.

I work at a parts house and was doing this last night, bouncing through the screens and looking for the right sized one. Printed off quite a few possibles.

Then I spent about two hours online and ran across the 3G. Sure, there are Bosch and ND racing alternators at half the size and three times the price, but they don't put out 85amp off idle - or even at 8,500 rpm. Most small alternators are exactly that - and not suitable. If an alternator of adequate capacity doesn't fit on the engine appropriately, it might be time to consider the bracketing as the problem.

One thing for sure, parts books aren't much on finding what would be a suitable substitute for a factory alternator. The size, output, mounting ears, and suitable electrical connections make big differences. There's no app that collects all the best features and then points you to a page - even countermen at parts houses have problems with it. The info isn't there.

But, the internet? Two hours taught me all about it. Ford built the 3G precisely because the previous alternators were less than robust, had poor electrical connections, and couldn't take the heat.

That stuff's not in those big catalogs at the parts house. I don't much waste my time on them just because of stuff like this.
