Trip report: Cobras at the Carmel Concours

I’ve been delinquent in posting my photos from this year’s Monterey Car Week, so here goes...

My first stop was the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue, which featured 12 original 289 and 427 Cobras in honour of the car's 50th anniversary. Here they are in order of appearance.

CSX2393 - The owner drove this car all the way from his home in Minnesota.

I also caught a glimpse of CSX2419 looking for a parking spot in Carmel. This car was also seen at the McCall Motorworks Revival and the Monterey Historics.

I noticed two strange fellows in hats and blazers behind 2393. Wonder if they were the judges?

Hmmm yes, they were very suspicious. Lurking around the cars and looking intently at some of their finer details. I figured they were part of those Northern California Straw Hat gangs I've been reading so much about. But for some reason Security refused to throw them out. ;)

This car looks to be getting all kinds of attention, it appears to have a couple of Wagners on the other end.

SunDude I transported GT 40 #83 to Fantasy Junction in Emeryville Ca. It was owned by Fittipaldi Racing, at least that's what the markings said. It was on their website for a short time and was sold. I wonder if it is the same car? Tom

SunDude 10-05-2012 06:36 AM

Glad you guys enjoyed the pics. Be sure to check out my other photo-laden trip reports from the Monterey car week, too.

The blonde and the guy she's talking to in my photo seemed to be dealers representing GT40 P/1083. They gave me a business car, but I think I chucked it. It might be the same car, but I don't think they were from Fantasy Junction IIRC. Brian

SunDude pm me an e-mail address and I'll send you the pics I have at delivery. Tom

SunDude 10-05-2012 11:48 AM

Tom, I received the photos you sent. Yep, it sure looks like it's the same car although it appears to have been cleaned up a bit since then (i.e., they've removed the window stickers, sponsor decals and pit stripes, etc.).

I have some other photos of the car at home. It now sports a Grand Prix Classics banner on the tail, which is probably the dealer (in La Jolla CA) who was representing it at Carmel.

The info sheet for GT40 P/1083 said the car had originally been sold directly by the factory to Team CAI and Fittipaldi Racing in Brazil; had been constructed to the same spec as P/1075 with the lightweight roof, a 302 with Gurney heads and Weber carbs, ZF transaxle and BRM wheels; had been driven by David Hobbs, Carlos Pace and Wilson Fittipaldi.

I didn't see your Cobra in Monterey, but I did find this nice photo of it from the Austin Formula Expo in June.
