Well, the pan is off along with the oil pump.
The pump has M84 cast into it, and either 211 or 214 cast in another spot, can't tell for sure which number it is. The pump screen is clear, no cracks in the tube, and everything looks brand new as far up as you can see in the engine. The vanes in the pump look new also. I just don't think the pump is bad, But???? Last night I started the car again before I got it jacked up and the oil pressure cold was at 70 lbs, just like always. Did see a drop of oil where the brass fitting screws into the remote casting that fits on the block. I took both fittings out and resealed them. Thanks for all the help/suggestions so far. I guess the nesxt thing is a new pump and Motorcraft filter. Mike |

On the high volume pumps, not needed just becasue you have a remote filter,as stated any pump can only pump a certain amount of oil thru the engine/bearings which has a direct correlation on your bearing clearances... In my race car (331 stroker), I have an 8 quart road race pan, remote filter with huge 12AN lines and an oil cooler, total capacity is 11.5 quarts of oil....on the dyno with only an oil filter screwed in the block my max oil pressure was just a tad less than 70 psi at 6500 rpms......in the car with everything hooked up at 6500 rpms on the track oil pressure is a tad over 60 psi...... I'm using a Melling HP series standard volume/standard pressure pump!!!!! At start-up, oil pressure instantly goes to 60 psi with cold oil, oil fully warmed up at 180 degrees and a 900 rpm idle yields about 35 psi, from 2000 rpms on up,oil pressure is 50 to 60 psi.... Before pulling your pan, I would have changed the oil filter to eliminate that as the problem....... David |
Well, the oil pump is in with a new Motorcraft filter, and new oil.
Have 65-70 lbs of pressure when moving and about 50 when idling. Can't beat those numbers. Not sure what caused original problem, but all seems OK now. A friend suggested installing an idiot light for the oil pressure as a back up. Guess I'll do that just because. Thanks to all for the answers and suggestions. Mike |
That idiot light is soooo important.
