Ceramic coat in your oven
I recently made a set of side mirrors for my car that turned out great.
The remarkable thing is I coated the brackets with Wheeler engineering ceramic coat. It is flat or matte black and is a gun finishing product. So, if you have some metal that you want a hard as nails finish and looks good, you might want to consider this stuff. Paint it on - 3 light coats Then put it in the oven for 350 degrees for 1 hour. I used 400 degrees. Take it out and let cool. The finish is very hard. The kit cost me $35.00 at Midway, but you can google wheeler and contact them directly of you want. Thought I'd pass this on as this is cheaper paying someone. :D :D |

Just be sure to use a spare oven and not one you eat from there are health risks. |

Curious as to the reason you couldn't use the same oven to cook in Dimis? Can't see it being much different to using an oven after using chemicals like oven cleaner - would be interested to hear more about it though |
Cleaned the grill this past weekend for a gathering and that same thought crossed my mind.The grill cleaning liquid is the same as oven cleaner,a lot of burgers and dogs as well as steaks were cooked shortly after cleaning.
Except for the camels hump and crossed eyes have not noticed anything unusual.Seriously would be interesting to know then maybe we do not need to know. |

I think it was Griots that used to advertise powder coating for using on small objects and doing it in your oven. But they had a warning that you should never cook food in that oven again. Go to a yard sale and buy an old stove that the oven works in and use that as your powder coating oven. Maybe this stuff that Tru used is different and can be cleaned but I would still be careful about it. Ron :) |
I've been reading up on the idea of powder coating at home on the net. Seems like it's pretty common and gives good results! Though, it doesn't seem very cost effective for just a few parts and every site mentions using an old second hand oven.
Seems to me you'd be mostly limited by the size of the oven you use, but it's a very interesting idea none the less! Found this supplier for us Aussies Powder Coating System |
I started doing home PC about 10 years ago. I bought a rebuilt oven for $50, and installed the plug in the garage. You are limited by the size of the oven. But a standard kitchen oven is big enough for most car parts - wheels, bellhousing, etc. Big parts like read ends and blocks would have to be sent out. But that's rare.
To do your own stuff saves you a lot of money and time. From start to installation is about an hour. If I go out on a week end to build some little bracket or component, I can then PC and install it the same day. There's a lot to be said for that. |

I baked my headers in our oven. An unbelieveably horrible smell filled the house. Mrs. Dirty was not impressed. Bought a new oven. (ours was pretty well shot anyway.) A friend of mine got into some trouble with wheel covers in his wife's dishwasher, too. I think we just need to face the truth about kitchen appliances.

Don't get caught, I have, heating bearings before fitting, and a ring gear, cost me a new one as well, just to keep the peace :CRY:
