Paint ceramic coating to freshen it up?
My car has silver colored ceramic coated headers and sidepipes. The side pipes are starting to show some wear after 8,000 miles and 4 years.
I am considering changing the color to semi gloss black. Is it better to send them out for a complete ceramic recoat or rough up and paint VHT or some other paint over the existing ceramic? Have any of you painted over the ceramic and does it stick for a long period of time? Does black coating or paint stain easy? That is a concern. The silver cleans up nicely. John |
As long as you use a high temp paint, Iv'e done it that way before with no problems....

The VHT hi-temp (+2000 deg) black I've seen is pretty flat. I haven't seen a hi-temp satin black paint yet. VHT makes caliper paint in satin black but it's only good to 900 degrees. That probably would be short lived up near the engine.

i've freshened up mine a few times now.......i use the black over the silver, then i use VHT's clear high temp over that for a little shine...

High temp paint
My coupe has coated pipes in flat white. I touch then up all the time with either Rustoleum or VHT high temp paint.
The Vht clear high temp sounds like what you would need to achieve the gloss . The Nut |
In my experience the paint will stick fine if you clean the pipes, The finish will fade eventually but they will look better. I do mine once a year.

my understanding is this is what they do at ERA...first they ceramic coat then then spray em with high temp paint

Try Aesthetic Finishers in Dayton, Ohio If you want them done right. Not very expensive either. They did mine a couple of years ago and they turned out perfect and matched my sidepipes spot on.

Once I see what you have I can offer some suggestions for you. In general, Bright Ceramic Coating does NOT WEAR. Over time the aluminum skin may oxidize slightly but this can be prevented by occasional polishing with a NON abrasive polish. We use and recommend Flitz liquid polish but there are many other aluminum polishes. I suspect you have some heat related issues but I can’t say for sure until I see pics. Thanks |
Stones thrown by the tires chip coatings after less than 1 year. That's wear.
