Almost done....just need to have them ceramic coated. I went with a 3.5" outer body/2.5" inner bullet-style muffler from CCE. They are the unpacked glass-pack style muffler. It gives the tone of an older glass-pack.

If you remember, I had 2.5" pipes going into 2" mufflers. After installing the 2.5 mufflers, the car runs completely different. It felt like the car took a deep breath when I first drove it....so much smoother.

Tone? Well, the owner of the custom exhaust shop said, "It is too loud for me, but I like them quieter the older I get." His daughter works at the shop, and said, "I think it sounds amazing....very mean".

Another friend said, "it sounds like a Cobra should...aggressive and menacing."

It definitely turns heads and gets a lot of waves and thumbs up. I will take some pictures of the new set-up. He made the length and position of the pipes perfect at the rear.

I think the car sounds nearly identical to Colin's narrow-hip car. Colin said that his car has glass-packed mufflers that were installed in 1969. When he told me that, I knew I wanted that older/worn-out/free flowing glass pack tone.:

Having grown up in the 60s I do have a fondness for the old glass pack mufflers from that era. Thrush glass packs with the square ends were my favorite back then. Looking forward to a sound clip.

Wow! CSX 3134 is beautiful and love hearing the exhaust side by side. Our car has a similiar growl.Personally and I emphasize personally, love the lines on a Cobra without the lump of exhaust hanging off the sides.

My first attempt at a You Tube Video. The car sounds much better in person and even better when you are driving in it. I hope you like it. It is very deep and throaty...my cheap video camera makes it a bit raspy sounding. I may have been too close to the pipes.

I can't tell from the video - did you run the tailpipes up and over the axle shafts or under them? Looks and sounds very good.

Some underside pictures would be nice.

I have my stuff all back from the ceramic plater but I'm hung up waiting on correct copper exhaust gaskets to arrive. Yes, I know I could have used hi-temp RTV.

I agree about the rear exhaust...thanks. I love the clean lines without the side pipes and the hood scoop.

It is soooo nice (cannot emphasize "sooooo" enough) to hear the exhaust note coming out the rear of the car. It is really a pleasure to drive. It is still loud, but it is a very balanced and comfortable sound when you do not have the luxury to put the top or windows up.

Dan, the pipes are under the axle shafts. My clearance is less, but I really do not go over speed bumps when I drive. Like anything, you have to get used to it and just be aware of the clearance. It is also has less bends, so the flow is much better.

The nice thing is how it looks from the rear. I will try to get some pics up....the 2.5" pipes fill up the empty area under the axles. When you look at the car from the rear, it fills that gap under the car.

Love the sound out the back of mine. And I think to my tin ear my SS system sounds deeper and baser (is baser a word?).

Like it? It sounds quite uncouth. I love it!
I also like:
The colour
No scoop, no side pipes,
Street dash
Tidy underbonnet.
So, all the things that make it a true replica rather than a hotrod.

Beautiful job, well done!
Cheers,
Glen

Mostly completed my undercar exhaust with 2-1/2 inch pipes. Unfortunately no video or sound effects yet to go with it yet.

ERA runs their exhaust collector pipe to the outside so it's more visible at the rocker than on original cars.

Dan,

VERY nice! That looks very clean and well done. Keep up the good work...looking forward to more future pics.

It is a beautiful job your car is lloking fantastic.Dug out all my Cobra stuff again after reading this exhaust thread.Thought again about running pipe up over diff the body is clearanced for it doubt that I will because of the heat.My diff does not touch the pipes even hanging free love the look from behind the car and especially the sound through Stainless Specialties mufflers.

427 Street 01-03-2013 09:30 AM

I would love to hear a video clip of the Stainless Specialties mufflers...do you have one available?

Another one of my passions restoring antique John Deere 2 cylinder tractors.
Wonder how the forum crowd would handle seeing a Cobra painted JD green with yellow wheels.Scary thought heh.
