Fuel injection system recommendation
I have been considering replacing my current 2/4 barrels Webbers system with fuel injection. Engine is a High Pro 289. Any recommendation and or advice would be helpful. Thanks

If you like the Weber look try 8 stack fuel injection. eigtht stack dot com.

If you want the vintage look, call Dale at eightstack.com
If you want the performance advantage call Garry Pollard at TWM borla. Of course there are other players. I also highly recommend "efihardware" these guys are as good as it gets for aftermarket efi stuff. Check out their YouTube clips. |
Thanks for your help and information, it's very much appreciated.

Another source of systems and information can be found at verycoolparts.com. Wayne Presley is the man to talk to there.

Eight Stack
I bought the GT 40 as a used car but with issues. I torn the car down to rewire it and correct a lot of problems. Plus I want to change the color.
I have not driven the GT 40. And I'm not a tuner person so I have depend on others to help in that area. After I purchased the car and could not get it to run I called Dale at Eight Stack and he mailed me a couple of DVD's to reprogram the Pantera ECU and a few parts. This system was purchased before Bob bought the company now know as Eight Stack. Bob Hockenberry and Dale have gone out of their way to help me at no charge. They offer a base 300 or 350 hp tune for the 302 motor. After you install the tune with a lap top you can make you own changes. I may change the Pantera unit when crank the car (soon I hope) because I may want more adjustability that it can deliver. Wayne Presley is the guy to go to if you want to tune a fuel injected, tubo'ed or supercharged car. He lives in South Alabama and several of my buddies have used him for tuning. I would like to replace the 306 with a 347 for my HP. That may be a spring project. We'll see. I've had a lot delays on working on the 40 this year but I would have to have it ready for the London Cobra Show 2013. See ya on the road Dwight |

It's hard to make any kind of intelligent recommendation without some idea of what your goals are.
You already have Webers, so it might be a good guess that you want to continue that look?? But, 8 stack systems will limit your total power production somewhat. If you're looking for max power, then maybe a common plenum system would be a better choice. How is your engine built now? Does it have the right cam and compression for an 8 stack system? If not, are you willing to change the cam? Once you've decided on the hardware, then you get to decide on your software. Once again, you need to define your goals somewhat. What features really interest you? Do you want to be able to switch back and forth between 2 different fuels? Do you want to include the ignition system? How much tuning can you do? Do you want internal data logging? How much fabrication do you want to do? Performance aftermarket is exploding these days. Lots of options available to the savvy shopper and builder. |
347
OK Bob
let's build a 347 on paper. I have Trick Flow 170 street heads and the Eight Stack. TFS said these heads would support 500 if I change the springs. Cost $90 for the springs. The cam that is in the 306 is a T.F.S. 51402000 Hy roller, 221/225 283/291 112 but I can buy the correct cam. I want 500 hp. at or below 6000 rpms. Would this be possible? Good street motor like the one in my Cobra. Dwight |
A couple of things to keep in mind with Webers or 8 stack EFI:
- Intake valves must be smaller than throttle body/carb bores. Otherwise, you'll lose velocity and all low end power. - The cam can have whatever lift and duration is appropriate for the motor. BUT, a wide LSA will perform better. Think of 114-116*. - Assuming you want an 8 stack system, I would call Wayne Presley. Dale at Eight Stack seems to have a good reputation, but I don't have any personal knowledge there. 500hp from a 347 should not be too difficult. That's only 1.44hp/cube. A good cam and plenty of compression should get you there fairly easily. Get your dynamic compression to about 8.3-8.4 or so. ECU and software are another issue entirely. You have to decide what features you need and don't need. Like anything else, try not to pay big money for features you won't use. It is sometimes better to build your own harness, rather than adapt one that's off the shelf. |
Thanks to everyone for your recommendations and opinions, their very much appreciated. Currently, I’m running a Hi Pro 289 engine it is stock with the exception of the 2/4 barrel Weber carburetors. It is probably producing around 350 hp. I’m not looking to produce a lot more horsepower, not that I am against a fire breathing, street pounding monster of an automobile; I have been there and done that, love every minute of it. :D
As you know, Weber's can be somewhat problematic so going to a fuel-injection system will eliminate some of those issues. I’ve had the opportunity to talk to the folks at 8 Stack and found them to be very helpful and accommodating. They are in the process of releasing a new management system, sometime in mid January. I understand that it’s going to be very tunable and altitude compensating. We will also not have to install a return fuel line, which would mean removing the rear bulkhead , a real pain , becouse they make a surge tank to go inline from the main tank. They will even throw in a base tune from the guy, who their CSX cars. So, all in all, they were very helpful and will probably move in that direction. Again, thanks for all your help and suggestions. It takes quite a bit to make 500hp with a 347 on a "real" dyno....not dyno software or someone's liberal engine dyno. You can make 500hp, but it will need more than 6000 rpm. A recipe for a sure 500 flywheel horsepower is a set of AFR 185 (or equivilent) heads, around 10.5:1 compression, and a cam with about 236° duration @ .050", peaking at 6500. |
