I have been stopped only once and the officer was OK. Young guy who said he was under orders to stop all Harley's and any other "open exhaust" vehicles on the road.
His test was simple, a thin night stick looking thing that he stuck in the end of the side pipe. He was looking for a "baffle" and mine has one. That's all he needed to move me on my way with no action. Actually, he apologized for the inconvenience and logged me down as a stop and in compliance (of what, who knows since sound was not the issue in the first place). I asked him how his Harley stops were going and he said not to well. Seems most are open aftermarket (mine also) and there is no baffle to hit. Fix-it tickets were being issued on that basis and the guys were throwing a fit. Interesting, I also asked him about the 18 wheelers and he said they were off limits for this exercise. So now we have seemingly privileged classes of vehicles for sound or baffle purposes. All took place in the San Martin/Gilroy, CA area during a training program out of the local HP facility for new officers, along Highway 101. I did read later the program was short lived and had been stopped. Can't quite remember why, but whatever was published probably wasn't the real reason anyway. |
I have never been stopped in Ontario Canada. I do get pulled over for officers to look at the car. I offer to let them take the car for a ride, while I get a coffee. So far no officer has taken me up on the offer.

No problem here. Mine are also straight through w/o baffles.

So would you guys recommend no packing or fiberglass or something else on my 3" mufflers?
I am in "doghouse" on the sidepipes already. My chaffeur in photo has put up with me for 24 years but she thought the red car made enough noise. The only cure for "Doghouse test" will be time and TLC!! Happy 2013. |
I've logged 13K miles in Indiana and Ohio and have never been stopped by an officer. 'Course I drive like an old grandpa. Well, kinda like one.

mine are pretty darned loud... I've rolled up next to several LEO's at stoplights, & all I've gotten are smiles & thumbs-up.

The use of the sound deadening material as used by hot rod guys on doors underneath finished leather does help a lot inside the car. My csx car is loud but inside just fine, no ear plugs needed. Went with spiral inserts on pipes for Bennett car and lost 60 h.p. Had to be as close to original as possible you know??? Afraid of tickets was part of the thinking also.

I like the noise, Its louder than the kids with the window shaking sound systems so I don't have to listen to thier crap, also it puts a smile on my face everytime I trigger someones car alarm
|
I got stopped once in El Cajon CA after driving down a narrow street with parked cars on both sides. I think I set off about 15 car alarms. The Sheriff's Deputy didn't think it was too great. But, he let me go after I asked him if he was friends with another deputy I know. Sometimes it pays to drop names!

Never a problem in Upstate New York but I'm running Gas-pipes S/S side pipes. :3DSMILE:

Never even pulled over in about 10k miles. I passed a policeman at 20mph over and he just watched me pass him.
One day I was sitting at a stop light in downtown Indianapolis and a LEO pulled up beside me with his windows down and said "Do you want to race?" I just laughed and he spun his tires pulling away. John |
During the Monteray car week this year we were driving the streets of Carmel looking for a place to eat when we pulled up beside a CHP on a bike, I asked him if he knew of a place to eat and he just pointed to his ears and said I can't hear you, we all smiled and I drove away.
