427 Side Oiler Identification Help
I'm looking to acquire a 427 Side Oiler engine that I looked at today. Any information is appreciated. The engine has the following:
66-427 in rear with a scribed V Date code is 2F20 - June 20, 1972? 352 in front of block Ribs on both sides No other casting numbers I can see Has intake so cannot determine if it has 66-427 in lifter valley Seller doesn't belive it has the oil provisions for hydraulic cam Seller also states its a higher nickel block Also that its a NASCAR Block (Can a NASCAR block have a 72 casting date and ribs?) Has 4 holes for motor mounts I believe Thank you in advance |
Screw in freeze plugs?
Casting code next to the oil filter boss? Pictures? |
Screw in freeze plugs.
Date code above oil filter |
ERANJ,
I have a ribbed side-oiler block date-coded similarly to yours. Mine has the hydraulic provision cast in it. David |
As said before, pics will help. If possible, with the engine upside down and the pan off, from both sides and in the guts. Get the numbers on the crank and rods if you can as well. Also, scrub just above the oil pump and get that number.

Sounds like a 427 service block to me. Not a true 66 NASCAR block. a true NASCAR block is designed for a flat tappet cam not a hydro cam. Also it would carry the block ID #'s C 3,4,5,6,7 AE-H stamp with the bullitproof versions being the 5, 6, or 7. Example C6AE-H. After 1967; 427 metal & casting procedures changed. I suggest you do some more reading b4 you buy. A "C5, C6 or C7AE-H block in premo shape/not repaired will cost in excess of $5K for the block alone if you can find one. That being said, the service block is ok. I just wouldn't plan on hitting 7 grand on a well built service block to many times! Good luck.

Service block.
High nickel...not. |
Royce Peterson is the guru supreme on all things FE.
Www.mercurycougar.net is good way of contacting him. He and Jim Pinkerton should answer all you want to know. If it has provisions for hydraulic lifters, it is a very rare 1968 only W code 427 or a service block. |
