Question about steering rack location
I got a DD Cobra kit a while back and always struggle with bump steer.
What I noticed compare to other cobras is that the tie rods are not in a straight line with the wheels. The rack was bolted so the tie rods have a big angle compare to the center of the wheels. It's like it's mounted too far back so when the wheels go up and down they also move in and out creating bump steer. Should I move the rack forward or will a bump steer kit could fix that. I need help, It's a matter of safety. Do you guys have pictures of a proper position of the rack in relation to the wheels,what angle should the tie rod be,thanks a lot guys for any help. Does the DD Cobra use Mustang II front end or geometry from the Mustang II ? I have heard that is a big problem with kit's using those components. I have no first hand experience the Mustang II/ Pinto front end.

The rack's position front-to-rear determines how much Ackerman you have. (Google that...)
Bump steer is controlled by the height of the rack and the length of the tie rods. Generally, the tie rod should be close to parallel to the angle of the lower control arm (as viewed from the front). The inner pivot of the tie-rod should be roughly on the line connecting the pivot axis of the upper and lower control arm, again as viewed from the front. To get things really right, the final adjustments should be done by actually measuring the bump steer. 1/8" off vertically is pushing the limit of tolerance. |

This is far too complex a problem to try and explain here. I had the same problem (not a D&D) scary to drive at speed.:eek: It took me 2 winters of massaging to correct mine and it now is the best steering vehicle in my fleet of cars ---01GMC p/u--09venza--13sonata. Part of the solution involved a custom width rack from flaming river. 2 sites i recomend you visit and print out their articles on bumpsteer, if you follow their advice you will be able to correct your problem. 1--Longacre---Tech section 2--heidts--- Craig |
