shift boot install
Ok, this seems ridicuously simple, but how do you get the rubber shift boot past the Reverse lock-out release bar ?????:confused:

The shift knob unscrews. From there it depends if you have an original Ford shifter or one modified to work on a Hurst shifter body.

Scary, but the boots we use have always been able to stretch over the T pull-up, one side of the time.

Dan: have the original mustang shifter. "T" bar has cable down to actuator lever, swaged at both ends, can't separate. Knob is off.

Scary is the word ! Stretched it, it split about 1/2". It's on, and I'll use it until I can come up with a good method. The boot was NOS, so maybe a fresh one will be more pliable.

NOS should not fail? Must have been really dry, does take some TLC and stretching. Sorry it failed.... Bummer as repops look so bad, in my opinion.

Best way is to remove knob, lightly lube the underside of the boot in the center, slide the boot over the top of the lever slide a round shaft (round is important) approx
(3/16" diameter shaft) screwdriver between the lever and the boot and gently pull the screwdriver sideways, gently streching the boot, take a little time and rotate the boot so the entire circumfrence gets worked over. Ultimately you'll be able get it over one of the "finger grasps", then do the same,(stretching if needed) for the other side. Take your time. |

Rick: the tool is the trick. I used a 90 deg cotterpin puller tool that had a small tip that was rough. I'll try your method next time I change the boot. (when carpet goes in) Thanks all |
Why not just remove the two bolts that fasten the lever to the shift mechanism? Then slide the lever through the boot, reapply some blue Loctite and refasten to proper torque? Then slide the trim ring over the whole assembly, fasten with the four Philips head screws and you're done. No need to stretch a rubber boot that was never designed to be stretched that way.
