Bingo. I use Saran Wrap over the paint, then place the fender cover on top of that. Never had to buff anything. Just make sure the fender is clean before applying the wrap.

If it is going to be a long build, then coat the fender with a good wax before applying the wrap.

With a good coat of wax as you suggest, could you leave it on for several months (say 4-6) without damaging the paint?

Longest I have ever had it on my paint was about 2 months and there was no side effects. Not sure how long you could leave in on there.

If the paint is fully cured, I suppose it could stay on their indefinitely, as long as it was never exposed to the Sun or any source of UV.

UV does break down Saran Wrap.

All good advice from the team. I warn you to steer clear of vinyl type fender covers with stitched edges, they scratch the paint.

I use the fender covers from Finishline Finish Line Accessories
for routine maintenance. And for larger jobs like brake fluid work will use the full fender, cowl, and and snout cover from Finishline, works really really well.
