Garage Advice Needed
I recently purchased a Cobra Replica and need some work done.
I am using a local high performance garage (Detroit suburbs) and got the following estimates: Tune-up, Plugs and Wires replaced $637 1 Hour Dyno Tuning $150 Wiring rewired and new harness $1,100 Rear Diff Leak repair $557 Intake Manifild Leak $545 Dyno Mat Insulation installation $1,100 Rollover Vent in gas tank $220 Brake and fuel line replacment (rubber to metal) $300 Replacing and relocating fuel filter from trunk to underside of car $350 Their hourly rate is $90. How do these estimates sound? Is $90 per hour a normal rate for a performance type shop? Any advice is appreciated!!! Thanks |
What type of Cobra do you own?
What drivetrain is installed? The more details you give us ahead of time, the less time we have to waste with guess work. Bill S. |

Edelbrook Carb 305 Ford Engine (1995) Antiques and Collectibles Kit I know it isn't an exact science, I am just looking to see if it is in the ballpark... |
Is the list of work you described what you asked them to do or what they told you needed to be done? Unless it's got major electrical problems, a new wiring harness is a bit drastic.
All the estimates seem really high to me except the dyno tune and wiring harness. Pete |

The rest are their recommendations what othre items they found when looking... |

Insulation matting should cost you about $150 for the materials, and maybe 4 hours to install. I'd take that to an upholstery shop for installation........ Bill S. |

Thanks for the feedback. Prices seemed a bit high but I haven't paid for garage work in awhile. I thought that maybe they'd be worth a premium if they are reliable and good at what they do (versus a local shop that works on anything). |

I agree with Bill (Mr. Mustang). I'd look for a well regarded general purpose shop to do the tune up, find and fix the intake leak, and fix the differential leak. If you like their work, ask them for an estimate on the other jobs (e.g., brake and fuel lines, tank vent and filter). The wiring and Dynomat jobs are not rocket science, but they can take some man hours. If you've got more money than time, those are good jobs for a competent hotrod shop. If you've got more time than money, you might be able to get enough good advice here to do those jobs yourself.

How much are you into the car - any idea of manufacturer >?
-- this seems like a car that needs lots of attention - at this rate , you might want to UNWIND the deal. --unless you got a screamin' deal on the car. Steve |
The car was a good deal.
About how much should I be paying? Are they 25%, 50% 100% more than average? Thanks again! |
Insulation
You need 75sq ft of insulation for a A&C ...took the afternoon with a good set of shears to cut the insulation and a couple rolls of foil tape.

I have a brand new Painless wiring harness I will sell you for $100 and you can re-wire your whole car in about 6 hours. Everything is labled and it is a no brainer. No offense but you need to find some other Cobra owners in your area and have a work day. You can get almost every bit of the things on your list done on a Saturday with a couple buds and a case of Budweiser.
Example a good set of Accel 714 plugs $40 with MSD wires @ $70 and ONE HOUR of your time and you are in it for $110 or less. Relocating the fuel filter $10 and 30 mins. (and why do you want to relocate it, mine is in the trunk next to my fuel pump?) . I am sure your brake lines are metal up to the axels and then you HAVE to use some flex line to the calipers (rubber hose or braided AN 4 lines). If you get into any problems you have some very good friends here that will gladly help. Clois Harlan |
At some point I would Highly recomend that you upgrade to a quick fuel 600cfm carb. You will absolutely love it and you won't have to worry about the Edelbrock washing down your cylinders.
