Side pipe question
While I dislike the heat guard on my side pipes, they are necessary for me because I have kids/wife/friends who ride in the car. That said, I like the look of the plain (solid) heat sheilds over the perforated ones or others with any type of design cut into them. Does anyone have the solid type and do they work well? I am concerned that the lack of holes/cutouts would make them get pretty hot.
Any feedback??? Thx

Are those the Steelshields? Which brand are they? Is there insulation between the pipe and the clamp? I like the look of those a lot. Thx!

I dont remember whos shield they are. They may be Steelshields. There is no insulation between the shield and the muffler. Just an airspace. |

Gary,
Instead of a heat shield, ever consider getting some welding blanket, cut down to size and velcro it near the door bottom on the inside? When riders get out / in the blanket gets flipped down to cover the pipes and then tucked back inside.
I didnt want riders to get burned getting in / out either but didnt want to bother with the look and cleaning of heat shields.

Don't think that's going to work, just visualize opening the door and how far out it has to be to allow access in and out of the car, not to mention where your leg has to be to exit or enter. |

Yeah, it works since thats what I use for guests. The piece of welding blanket is attached between the seat and car side so that it rolls out over the pipe right where your leg would hit it.
The post wasnt clear and it sounded like it was attached to the door itself.

Friend of mine got blankets from Hillbank. They are attached to and roll up inside and roll out when getting out. I have that on my list. The shields rgnbull1227 have look great and that looks like a great option too. Wonder if they are bolted or welded on?

While I appreciate the ingenuity of the idea Im not crazy about the fabric roll idea-the solid shields look very low key, I plan to put a layer of silicone cloth between the clamp that holds them onto the pipe and the pipe itself-this will (I think) offset the heat build up delta from the perforated ones. It will at least lower the conductive heat transfer, if they dont work I can always switch to the ones with the hole in them later. Since they will be black they arent that noticable anyway.

i tell my passengers how to enter and exit, feet first getting in and ass at the top of the seat then slide down, getting out is the opposite. no problems so far but i haven't had any blue hairs yet.

Ill take close up pics of the shields and post them. They are only warm to the touch. The problem is, my wife getting out one day touched the pipe but the outlet and got burned. Gotta stay away from that. |

Somebody had some 3.5"diameter Flowmaster mufflers that would need ceramic coating with built in heat shields that were invisible. Jay Leno has the same thing. They are advertised on this site, too.
