Fire bottle
Did a search on fire suppression systems, and most were several years old.
Looks like Coldfire is the way to go, but would like to know if anyone has installed one recently and what might be the latest dope on these systems (and cost!!!) |

Curious, so I went on Cold Fire's web site and see a lot of aerosol and extinguishers, but nothing on any complete systems for cars. Would that be a custom system where you provide your own plumbing and nozzles? And, is it a tank that is mounted remotely, such as in the trunk, similar to the old Halon or Co2 systems?

I mounted my nozzles---4 of them---on the inside and outside of my foot boxes. Thus, I have two nozzles underhood, one on each side of the engine (fuel pump on one side, carb connects on the other). The idea here is (hopefully) to suppress any underhood fire so that my Cobra does not end up like that Corvette Stingray I saw up in Portola Valley. The other nozzles cover my legs and those of my passenger so we have a little more time to get out and not get burnt. The bottle is mounted in the trunk. I am using Firesafe Halon.
This setup allowed me to run one line from the trunk into the cockpit, then split that line once to each side. The nozzles are mounted on a T top and bottom: inside the foot box and inside the engine compartment. I also have a fire extinguisher. Seeing that beautiful Corvette get torched is what led to my decision to install the system. DD |
You know, Lippy, if you're not racing a fire-suppression system is a nice-to-have, but not necessary. A good fire extinguisher is a must.
I do like having my Halon system. I don't think about it much, but should the unthinkable happen, it would prove to be more than a nice-to-have. But, you know: Brakes? Check! Fire Suppression System? ?? DD |
I agree extinguisher is useless in a real situation
First car fire I watched was a 914 at a de event That sucker was molten lava in minutes. I bought a 6 nozzle set up for my 930 the next day . $700 For the kit " solid 10 hour day installing . Money well spent That 914 had a simple injector leak , and this car had An easy 40k into it It was mean . A system would have killed that Fire with no effort and minimal clean up. |
I even school passengers on how to pull the extinguisher in case of an issue, but seems to me that if I have a "FIRE" pull-tag, I'm better off.

"Coldfire" is the media, some chemical added to water which makes a foam. (I think) Supposedly it doesn't harm anything it comes into contact with. I'm looking for a company that uses it in their extinguisher bottles.
I wouldn't rely on Halon, as it was designed to work in closed spaces and depletes oxygen. Your cockpit is not a closed space. |
