CSX4060 at Long Beach Grand Prix
Wish me luck guys. I was invited to bring my Cobra up to Long Beach tomorrow and park it in the Mother's Exotic Car Paddock at the Toyota Grand Prix (what us older guys still call the Long Beach Grand Prix). Of the 250 cars in the paddock, they're inviting 50 of them to drive the course for a lap before the race. I spent the day checking the brakes, lubing the suspension, changing the oil, checking the timing, etc. to get ready for the drive up and (hopefully) a drive around the track.
What's better than this? My father, who helped me build the car 15 years ago, flew out from DC to make the trip with me. We considered towing the car up from San Diego, but decided to man up and drive. Before the day is out, we'll stink of 91 octane, our faces will be burned from the sun, ears will be ringing and we'll feel beaten by wind and adrenaline overdose. Can't wait. |
That's an incredible experience, Obsessive!
Congratulations. Post a follow up, please. |
Thanks for thinking of, and taking your Dad. Such consideration is not everywhere the usual thing....

Sounds like a perfect day.
But it never happened without lots of pics! |
Good luck! I still call it "The Long Beach Grand Prix" because I was there when it WAS "The Long Beach Grand Prix"! (F1)
Yes, we need to have pics. Larry |

Wow. That was, indeed, the perfect day.
We made a cold, early drive and met about 40 cars at a Starbucks in Long Beach. At 9:00 AM, we hauled tail - and I mean HAULED - across 405 and down 710 into the race area. At 10:20ish, they announced the cars that would be driving the track and mine was one of them. At 11:30, we hit the track for an experience of a lifetime. Thanks for the encouragement guys. You all would have been proud to see a Cobra out there. I had the oldest car there and the only Shelby in a sea of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porches, Aston Martins, even a McLaren. The other cars sounded incredible when they were lining up. The 427, however, dominated the scene when we lit her off. I let Dad drive and had a blast (as you can tell) videoing the experience. He had a pretty bad downshift coming into a tight turn and got a little squirrely. Hope it's fun to watch. Video |
Looks like a blast! Thanks for sharing.

What a cool experience! And nice that you could share it with your dad. Unfortunately my dad was never able to experience my Cobra, as he passed away 11 years ago (Apr 23).
I've embedded your YouTube video for you: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpWhcnbiRQ0[/ame] |
I was their with the Hillbank gang.........Thanks so much to Lance and Shayna for the invitation. We were not lucky enough to drive the track. Saw CSX4060 drive by me on their arrival..........Next year maybe they will have a few more Cobra,Daytonas and GT40 and fewer Ferraris / Lambo's..........Love it when they rap their exhaust and a Cobra drowns it out......No bias here.

What a great day! Your car looks and sounds awesome!

I'm jealous, Obsessive!
That's so cool. On Sunday morning I saw groups of Lambos, Ferrari's, Porsches, etc. (60-70 cars) driving down the 405 and I didn't even think to put 2 and 2 together about the race (not such a strange sighting in SoCal). I'd rather drive a nice Cobra on a track than any of those fancy lad exotics anyday. :MECOOL: |
