Switchable exhaust

Been thinking about how to get the best of both worlds in terms of exhaust sound. Love that loud rumble coming out of side pipes at times, but it does become overwhelming at times. Anyone install one of the electrically controlled systems which opens/closes flaps to divert exhaust under the car?
I know that under car systems can be problematic for clearance issues (especially over the axle). I'm thinking of running it just short of the axle and
having them exit in front of the rear wheels.

Any input is greatly appreciated. And yes, I know about earplugs :)

I had an underbody, side-exiting exhaust, right in front of the rear wheels, and I still needed to drive with an ear plug. Since I have a Street car, I chose to put the correct rear-exiting exhaust on my car. It is very free-flowing, and it is a pleasure to drive now.

I don't have live side pipes so my system will be a little less complicated than yours if you've got them. But I do have an under car exhaust system finishing at the rear of the car with electric cutouts that exit under the side pipe outlets. They are from Quick Time Performance and are the 3" oval ones which give a bit more ground clearance. The only issue I've had was a lost butterfly valve out of one side, which I'm about to replace. But generally they've been good. You can open or close them via a button on the dash, they are programmable, with 4 choices. I have 100% closed 25% open, 50% open and 100% open. Here's a link.

When I did our undercar exhaust was really concerned about going up over the rearend because of the fiberglass being so close with 2 1/2" pipe.We had the frame clearanced so that the exhaust would not be the lowest point under the car.Out of the muffler under rearend pipe follows body lines. With car on lift rear does not droop onto pipe it looks great from behind.Sound for us is just right plenty of muscle.

Earplugs. Variable sound level but how far you push them in ;)

I am thinking of a dual system. Put the cut out just before the turnout of the side pipe then go to under the car to the back through some turbo mufflers. So nice and quiet for just driving around or when you just don't want the noise in your face kinda sound then flip a switch and ROCK AND ROLL BABY!!

i think this would be a great system. Too hard to package on mine (ground clearance, no place I can see that isnt butt ugly for the turbo mufflers to sit), but if you had a bit of a clean sheet, design this when you are in the build phase, it would be an excellent idea.

Some sidepipes are more restrictive than undercar exhaust with proper mufflers. I had 3" straight mufflers made for my Backdraft that had two mufflers in each round pipe. Some folks say they are losing 75 hp with restrictive side pipes.

Right. That's one of the reasons I want to go with an electric exhaust cutout system, like the ones from Quicktime Performance. Seems like the best of both worlds...keep the loud nasty sound of the side pipes, with the option of routing the exhaust thru an under car muffler when we want a more quiet ride.
From what I'm reading, the challenge is routing the under car exhaust. Though, got to believe that with all the creative minds on this forum, someone muc have figured out how to run this setup.

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on my sidepipe re-do. The plan at the moment is to do a 3" core/4" body smooth (not louvered) perforated muffler, longer than standard (probably in the 28" range), and have the tailpipe section removable so I can insert a spiral muffler section in either the tailpipe, muffler body or both. I can then play around with what works the best, and have it tuneable. Not switchable, but at least tuneable.
