First he asked at Buick for an engine and after that he was trying to get Chevy interested, at last he got the deal with Ford.

My lawyer tells me to stay way from this thread. I mean - just where do you start..??

When I was at the AC factory in Brooklands, Brian Angliss laid out all the letters from Shelby and his lawyers over their little 'dispute' (it was a very big table) and I read the lot. It gave me a different perspective on the whole Shelby/Cobra scenario. As has been indicated on this forum in the past, when you dealt with Shelby, you were dealing with two different people....

Love this thread!

Does this fit "Myths and Legends" ? ;)

From Road & Track September 1962

AC Ford Cobra 260:
0-60.....4.2sec
0-100..10.8sec
Standing 1/4 mile...13.8sec @ 112mph
Top speed ...153mph @ 7000rpm

Cheers,
Glen

Only two? ;)

The "cunning plan" is only a seed of an idea, but the thing that got it started was my quest a short while back to learn how the original SW fuel pumps were configured on the 427 race and S/C Cobras. I was surprised by the number of different opposing "facts" that were put forward by different people. There is so much myth and rumour surrounding Cobras that I thought it would be interesting to gather them up and if possible, identify the truth behind some of them.

Thanks Glen, certainly does. I have no idea how accurate those figures are. Can anyone with a 260 or a better idea than I shed any light?

FB:
Sounds about right to me. Back in the early 60's, not being able to afford a Cobra, I stuck a 260 (bone stock, 2 barrel, 164HP) into a 53 MG TD, 3 speed ford tranny, comet rear w/ stock 4" mg wheels and tires, dual exhaust, no headers, and turned low 14's at the strip !!!!

"Approximately 300 were built" must be a myth because practically everyone I've spoken with about my replica project knows someone that had an original.

As someone once told me, "there were just over 1,000 Cobras built originally, but there are now only about 3,000 left." ;) :)

Back in the day when Carrol was hawking his Cobra, he only had one and painted it a different color every week to make it look like he had a whole stable of them when he tried to market it. So goes the lore....

I believe this one is actually true. In one of the tribute shows after Shelby's death, one of the first cars he built was on display (can't remember the #). It had a fairly large paint chip and you could clearly see layers of different color paint around the edge of the chip.

CSX2000 was bare aluminum, yellow, then blue. That's it. ;-)

Old Phart 06-05-2013 06:59 PM

Yep, I done had me a 1961 Cobra, and I whooped everbody's ass everwhare!!

Jaydee 06-05-2013 07:05 PM

So I wonder what the number of replicas there are now, around the world?
Must be 10's of thousands?

More from Road & Track, this time February 1968:

"Carrol Shelby's Personal Cobra", the twin Paxton supercharged 427 auto:
0-60.....3.8sec
0-100...7.9sec
Standing 1/4 mile...11.9sec @ 116mph

...but the bit I like is "Top speed? We didn't run it. The Cobra isn't an aerodynamic wonder, but 182 @ 7000rpm seems reasonable with the output and the gearing" ;)

Cheers,
Glen

Can that be verified A-Snake? Whilst it is more than one colour it isn't the multicoloured rainbow of the legend.

There were a few Cobras badged as "FAIM", meaning "Ferrari's Ass Is Mine". The FIAM badging is on the sides. I have seen one in plastic wrap with no motor. All aluminum.

Danr55 06-06-2013 02:06 PM

I think I read that the TYFAIM badging was at the bottom of the rear number meatball the second year Shelby raced the cobras. He was upset about some shenanigans that Ferrari had pulled with FIA complicity.

The 'chip' under the nose of CSX2000 shows the original yellow. The myth is discussed by Rinsey Mills in his recent book Carroll Shelby The Authorized Biography. I don't have the page number handy.

From Octane Magazine, August 2004

Bruce Ropner, the original owner of COB6008 (the first FIA-bodied car to be available for sale):
"managed to cover the 222miles between Hyde Park in London and Darlington in 2 hours 18 minutes late one night in the summer of '64, touching 167mph as the A1 dipped past Grantham and enjoying the moment so much that he turned round and did it again"

Cheers,
Glen
