'63 289 Cobras Racing at Riverside
Hello All,
Just posted this on our YouTube Channel today: 1963 LA Times GT Race at Riverside - YouTube Enjoy! |
Thanks...my Dad took me to that race.
|
Enjoyed it!
Suits me if you hang out with us on Club Cobra a lot more often. :MECOOL: David |
Terrific! Thanks for sharing.
|
Excellent video! Thanks for posting.
After reading about it for years, it was cool to watch that "constipated bull" charging. |
That was an excellent video and thanks for posting it. Brings back a lot of memories of when the Cobras were ruling the tracks.

Glad you all enjoyed it.
Every time Bob and Allen get together, this race always comes up. 50 years later and they still have a laugh over the spin and the nudge Allen gave Bob at the start (00:23), which lead to his tire blowout on the victory lap. Attached is a photo of Allen telling the story at Pomona last year. Hope they get together in California in a couple weeks. Cheers |
It would be really cool to have lots more of these kinds of things from Bob's history posted. I have a few other forums that might like to have the same content. You probably know of some of them. The first place I'd suggest is team shelby.

Is the car that appears at about 1:00 (#211) that looks like a Daytona coupe a Kellison?
|
#211 is actually a Ferrari GTO, driven by another Californian and Ferrari F1 driver Richie Ginther.
Today that car is worth north of $30 million! Cheers |

It was sweet revenge to beat that particular Ferrari GTO #3987 in this race as it was the same car that killed the Cobras at Sebring earlier in the year. In that race the Ferrari was driven by some guy named Roger Penske.
Today, the car is owned by Ralph Lauren. Cheers |
Wow, did I get that one wrong!!! Now I can see it but I didn't click when I saw it in that little snippet. Sure looks like my friend's Kellison though.
Penske, huh? Between you and all the others there it's automotive history!!! Thanks for visiting us! See you on Boulder in September! Bring some classes to the silent auction and I'll sign up again. |
Some may not know this but the livery color/design on the yellow Grant Cobra was by George Lucas who was friends with Grant. That kid went on to the movie business I heard.
|
Very cool!:p
|
Love it
Please keep telling us the interesting, historic, and comical stories of Bob's
past racing days. I can visualize the events as though I was there witnessing the whole thing! See you at SAAC-38.....;) |
Believe it or not, that's the first YT video I've seen of the 289's racing. Thanks for the link. You have to think that compared to today's racing with all the technology and sophistication of just a NASCAR Cup Car, driving a British Roadster with a V8 with a simple roll bar and seat belt, these guys were racing literally by the seat of their pants but I bet, having a helluva good time.
|
Hum I wonder whatever became of that Penske guy?
