Superformance IRS noise?
I'm having difficulty identifying the diffy noise in a Superformance Roadster. It sounds like a bearing noise.
It has the aluminum case Ford 8.8. When driving the noise occurs briefly as you advance through the gears. This would be during the brief no load while shifting. It is constant during coasting when out of gear. It does not matter if the clutch is depressed or not. Which tells me it is most likely not the throwout bearing. I removed the driveshaft to isolate the Tremec 600. Ran it on the lift and was able to shift threw the gears and it is quiet. I completely removed the pinion mount e-brake, thinking it may be the culprit with no luck. So it appears to be a bearing in the diffy but I'm not sure. Anyone have any thoughts concerning this? Again, The noise comes in fairly loud, coasting out of gear, clutch depressed or not. BTW, A brief history about the car, it only has 3800 easy miles on it. It sat new, unfinished in a shop for about seven years before getting it. Diffy grease was new when the car was finished about 3 years ago. Thanks! Terry |
Outside wheel bearing! My left drivers side went bad last year. I went ahead and replaced both. Mark

I second the wheel bearing. Speak to Dennis Olthoff. They replaced my left rear and have had no issues since in 30k+ miles.
You will find that many have been replaced. It is not simply wear out with usage. |
I had about 7,000 miles on mine when it went bad. My friend has a lot newer Cobra then mine and his went bad at 3,500 miles. (Pretty sure it was 3,500! I know it was under 4,000) I meant to tell you I first replaced both of my U-Joints on the drive shaft. Still had the noise. Then I pulled the right passenger side and replaced it. ( It sounded like the noise was coming from the right side. It didn't seem bad to me. Then I test drove it still had the noise. Finally pulled the drivers side and it was dry!!! I also had my the joints checked and lubed next to the rear end. They were fine. My friend replaced both of his bearings at the same time also. Mark

Terry, Go on the Superformance section of Club Cobra the 4th page. There is a thread about the wheel bearings! I changed mine with Jerry's help on the first one. Did the second myself. Mark

I had 6,700 miles on SPF 2608 when I realized I had a bad right rear wheel bearings. I replaced them both right in the middle of summer. I think they were bad for quite awhile before I replaced them. Call me if you have any questions or get stuck. Not that I really know anything, but I might be able to help in some way. Ward at (360) 739-6803. I had to get a new upright as well and Vintage Upgrades and Performance out of Humble, TX had a used upright I was able to buy.

Did you check the lube on the rear drive shaft u-joint?
Mine had a howl coming from the rear. Turned out to be a dry u-joint. |
I had a wheel bearing go bad on the left rear at 10K miles. Panavia's shop did the work, but they found that the original bearing wasn't fully pressed into the upright. They ended up replacing both bearings and hubs.
